    Hey there, my computer recently recieved a malware attack. I forgot to put my firewall back up after letting my xbox stream from my laptop. I mostly managed to fend off thanks to yalls READ & RUN ME FIRST guide. However I still have problems with Google links getting redirected. MBAM keeps detecting the same file over and over again even if I reboot. I appreciate if you can help me with my problem, so thanks in advance.

    In addition to the google links getting redirected, here's some additional notes:

    -Had problems completely uninstalling Java while following the READ ME FIRST. Uninstalled JRE via add/remove programs but when I used the online Java version checker it said I have the latest version on my machine.

    -Next I ran JavaRa but the results came out the same.

    -Internet Explorer icon keeps reappearing on my desktop even though it was never there before.

    -Windows Security Alerts icon keeps reappearing on my tray.

    -Automatic updates seemed to have been blocked and reappeared again after completing the READ ME FIRST. I applied the updates.

    Thanks!,
    Optimus P

    Please download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please copy that report to this thread

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    C:\WINDOWS\msdownld.tmp
    c:\documents and settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\ofwqylhnb

    RegLock::
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2581610734-1340675633-1247259385-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved\{AD31EF7A-187B-5B7C-0AAA-6520BD80F040}*]
    @Allowed: (Read) (RestrictedCode)
    @Allowed: (Read) (RestrictedCode)

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinServers]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    How is the machine behaving? Still being redirected? If so, tell me if the redirects occur in safemode.

    Also attach the log from Mbrcheck.exe.

    Hey Kestrel, thanks for the quick reply! Here's all the logs. Unfortunately I still get google redirects, even in safe mode.

    Are you using the most up to date version of firefox? which is 3.6.8?

    Also I need to ask some questions:
    1. Do you have any drives that has a non-windows installation on them
    2. Are all drives NTFS formatted
    3. Do you have any non-standard or special MBRs which can occur from companies like Dell or HP who frequently install additional partitions used for recovery partitions in lieu of giving CD/DVDs.
    4. Is any program like Grub ( see:http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ ) being used
    5. Is drive-encryption being used?
    6. Are any drives external USB pen drives or external hard drives being used?
    7. VERY IMPORTANT: Do you have all important data backed up? You really should do this before continuing since we will need to rewrite your MBR to fix this and while most times this can be done without any problem, these infections can react badly and that could result in a PC not being bootable. You really don't have much choice though since these infections are too dangerous to your security to leave on a PC.

    Run MBAM again to see if it is still finding what it repeatedly finds. Let me know. Address my questions.

    Hey there, Kestrel. Thanks for the help so far.

    I've been using 3.6. I've updated to 3.6.8 now.

    1.No drives with non-windows installations.
    2.Yes all NTFS.
    3.Maybe. My Gateway laptop came with a recovery partition.
    4.No, nothing like Grub.
    5.No drive encryption.
    6.No external hard drives are being used.
    7.Backing it up now!

    MBAM picked up the registry key relating to WinServers again.

    I shall get back to you shortly. I have something to enquire about (and I did not receive notification of your updated post to this thread for some reason, it just started showing in the malware forum tonight)

    It very well could be your router. There is a little button on the bottom (on most models ) to reset it to factory settings. Do that. You may then need to go back into it to set any special setting that you may have set up originally. But do that first and see if that doesn't take care of it.

    You can test this theory by connecting directly to your modem and if the redirects stop, then you know it is the router that is infected.

    Also answer:
    • Do the redirects occur in both Internet Explorer and Firefox?
    • Do they occur when you are using safe mode with networking?

    Yup, it was the router. I connected to the modem directly like you said and google no longer got redirected. Reset the router and now everything seems to be in order! Thanks a million!

    To answer your questions, I didn't try IE and yes the redirects still occured in safe mode w/ networking.

    Thank you so much again for your help!

    That's great that it's sorted! :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
