I have mail that needs to be put into a file folder, so the mail all stays in one place
can I do this automatically or do I have to move each email to the folder?

It depends whether you are accessing your 'GMAIL' on the web or in a mail program.
On the web with Google's 'GMAIL' you create 'Labels'. You can create 'Filters' to move mail directly to divert it from the Inbox. Go look at the settings.

Create a label (same as creating a directory or folder). In the left column under More, if I click I get options of Manage labels and Create New label.

Go to the inbox and let's suppose you have twenty emails there that you wish to move.
Put a check/tick in the box in front of the emails you want to move.
Go to the top and select the Move to this only appears after you have selected at least one email and the arrow will indicate you choice of labels/folders. Pick the new one you created and all twenty messages are gone from the inbox and now in the new location.
