Google problem: Address changes by itself

When I'm traveling abroad and type "www.google.com" into my laptop, the address changes by itself to "www.google.xx[country extension]."

For example, I'm in Finland now, and google.com changes to google.fi. To boot, everything appears in Finnish. This is driving me nuts. I want my trusty(?) old google.com - not google.fi, not google.ph, ... I just want the thing I'm used to using... but my not-so-trusty google doesn't want to play ball. Or maybe it's the browser? I'm using firefox...

How can I stop these changes for good? Not just for google, but for any internet address that might fall victim to this kind of unwanted, unwelcome and perverse address tampering???

On the right hand side of the google entry bar there are three links listed. One of them is Preferences. You can make it so that google will only search for pages in English, or other languages. I believe the middle one is preferences. The name is Asetukset on the .fi page. I am guessing that "englanti" is english. Click the bar at the bottom, after checking the box next to englanti and you should be all set. This still keeps the google page in that language but makes all searches in english.
