I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Vista, 3 GB ram, 32-bit operating system. On Nov. 25 I discovered that all my Google searches were being redirected, often first to a window for theclickcheck.com, once even to a porn site. When I ran my first McAfee scan, it showed the hiloti.gen.j virus. Also I saw a reference to 32/Pinkslip and Exploit_ByteVerify in the log. I had Mcafee clean it. I then downloaded AVAST and found that some were still there, so I cleaned it with that.

At that point I found your site and read through and followed the READ & RUN ME FIRST post, following the instructions very carefully. The first scans showed a clean system. I got all the way to running ROOTREPEAL, but it stopped twice with the following appearing in the box:

    C:\hiberfil.sys LOCKED TO WINDOWS API!
    C:\Windows\System32\GATHER~1.VBS LOCKED TO WINDOWS API!
    C:\Windows\System32\GATHER~1.XSL LOCKED TO WINDOWS API!
At the bottom, it showed C:\Windows\Temp and "scanning for hidden\locked files.

Each time I waited for some evidence of movement for about 30-40 minutes, until I was convinced it was stuck.

I then tried to run COMBOFIX. It ran through the 50 stages but when t rebooted, I got the black screen saying problems and that I should go in safe mode. I did that, but COMBOFIX left no log or results for me. I also tried a Google search, and this time theclickcheck.com came on again and the system ran as it had when I first noticed the problems. I rebooted again and tried scanning again with MalWareBytes and McAfee, both showing clean systems. I'm at a loss.

I'm attaching the logs I have from the process. Can you help me?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to attach the requested logs from SUPERAntiSpyware and MGtools.

Here is the MGTools log. Unfortunately, I uninstalled SuperAntiSpyWare and so lost the logs. I'll run it again and send that log.

    Sorry.

And here is the SuperAntiSpyware log just run this afternoon. It showed no problems, but I still got redirected in a Google search this morning. Let me know if you need anything else.

Combofix.exe is not on your Desktop. Where did you save it and run it from? Did you have McAfee shutdow before trying to run it?

Other than what Malwarebytes removed, your logs are fairly clean. We just have a couple of things to fix. However let me ask some questions since you say you are still being redirected.
    • What browser are you running when the redirects occur?
    • Is it Firefox? If yes, do they also occur with Internet Explorer ( or vice versa )?
    • Also check to see if they occur in safe boot mode? Also check if they still occur with all addons disabled?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Combofix.exe was on my desktop, but when it seemed to cause a major problem when I ran it, I uninstalled it. Yes, I did have McAfee shut down when I ran it.

I used both Firefox and IExplorer when the redirects occurred. I had no problems in safe mode and now I don't have any trouble in either mode. The last time I had a problem was when Combofix blew up on me, and then the redirect showed up again after having seemed clear.

I've run Avenger and MGTools as requested. They are attached.

Thanks for your help. I just want to be sure everything is clear before I start using this laptop normally. Please let me know any next steps I should take.

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
