Google Redirect, Spyware popup, Bluescreen

    Google Redirector and fake spyware from aol.com, had pop-up "virus protection, your computer is infected, do you want to scan...etc." Google Chrome would not find any websites, nor would internet explorer. Firefox still worked, but clicking on links would take you to random addresses. Safemode with networking would bluescreen every time.

    After running other steps, safemode worked and MGTools would only run in safemode, otherwise it would bluescreen every time as well.

    Performed all steps and it seems I'd got my browsers back, safemode works, and now upon activation of AVG, it finds trojan horse "Rootkit-Pakes.U". Between that and one or two system files that did not clean in the scans (tied to system processes or in-use),

    Upon a new scan with AVG, I find "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\rasacd.sys";"Virus identified Win32/Patched.DX";"Object is white-listed (critical/system file that should not be removed)"

    This file has been a repeat offender since the problem began, and can't be healed. I'm not ready to toggle the system restore yet... am I all clear?

    It looks like Combo may have fixed your redirect issues.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\temp\scs9.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\temp\scsE.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\temp\scsf.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Janiece\Application Data\gklupx.dat
    c:\documents and settings\Janiece\Local Settings\Application Data\xqgluuc
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{C84D72FE-E17D-4195-BB24-76C02E2E7C4E}]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now boot into normal startup mode and run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks Tim:
    Sorry for the delay - the family's computer and we left it with them.

    During the process, in-between the two steps, it bluescreened and we had to restart. Upon restart, we had the system-locked file rasacd.sys that AVG picked up but can't clean, so we turned off AVG again and ran the steps.

    Other than this notification, everything seems cleared up. Think there's any benefit to switching to Avast?

    Logs attached. Thanks very much

    I think AVG is giving you a false positive. If you want to try running Avast, you need to totally remove AVG first. Please go here and download and run the AVG Removal Tool.

    In the meantime, please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). Tell me what Avast finds, if you have replaced AVG.
