    Hello,

I have the Google Redirect virus that many others have also asked for help with.

I have downloaded and run the programs listed in the Read ME file.

Root Repeal would not run for me. All other logs needed are attached e as per instructions.

The thing that really cheezes me off is I'm the person all my friends call when they have a computer problem, and I'm usually able to get them up and running, but this problem has me totally stumped.

Thank you in advance for any help that I can get.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Are you still having redirects? It looks like the cleaning process may have fixed your problem. However you do have a few things to cleanup from programs that are no longer installed.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you for your help. I still have the redirect virus. I have run ComboFix and MG Tools and have attached the logs to this message. I checked after running the 2 programs and I still have the redirect virus.

so where do we go from here? I do like a good mystery, but not being able to fix this on my own has been a royal pain. :)

You did not run the last fix I gave you properly. You need to create the CFScript.txt file and drag it on top of ComboFix. All you did was run ComboFix which is not what I requested. Please repeat the last fix properly and attach new logs.

If still having problems afterwards, address the below.

Does it occur with multiple browsers ( like Chrome, IE, and FireFox)? Does it occur in safe boot mode?

Is router being used to access the internet? If so, do other PCs on the network show the same redirects? If yes, then the router may have been come infected and may have to be reset back to factory defaults. This occurs quite frequently with DNS server hijackers.

These logs are not showing signs of another type redirect infection which is referred to by names like TDSS or Alureon infections; however it is still possible that a new form is on this PC and that a driver file has become infected.

This PC is running barebones base Vista with no service packs. Why hasn't it been updated?

My apologies for my errors. I have re-run the Combofix and MGtools and have attached logs as requested.

I am having the redirect problem with Chrome and IE. I have no other browsers installed.

I haven't updated Vista because the first time I downloaded their service packs I had problems with drivers not working and other things not running correctly.

There is a router for the house internet, but this is the only computer having problems with the redirect virus. I can reset the router to factory settings, but I'll let you check out these logs first.

    Thanks again!

    Hello,

I decided to check the router and reset it to the factory defaults, and it seems like the browser redirect issue is gone! I'll wait for your reply on the Combofix and MGTools logs before updating anything else.

Thank you for your patience and your valuable help!

You're welcome. If things are still working after the router reset and your PC has also been reset without the problem returning, then move on to the below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ok, no more issues with the redirect virus, I have followed the last set of instructions you have posted, and all is well.

    Many thanks for your help!
