I am running Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit, on a laptop. Around New Year's time, I got infected with the Internet Security 2010 virus, which was rid of (hopefully) with MBAM.

Now, I've had Google and other search engines (Bing, Yahoo, etc) redirecting my searches to random websites. Sometimes, in the middle of reading a website, I will have a browser pop up as a new tab. The browser I use is Firefox. Prior to coming to this website (and signing up as a member), I ran HitManPro and it picked up atapi.sys and jolnirv.sys as malware. Even though these two bits were quarantined and removed, they still showed up with each new re-boots.

Anyways, I followed all the steps as indicated in the READ ME thread and have attached the following logs. RootRepel will not work for me for it keeps having a pop-up reporting an error regarding <<DeviceIoControl Error!>>

Help would be greatly appreciated for the redirecting is driving me crazy!

EDIT - After running all the programs as indicated, I am still getting the redirects/random pop-ups.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Why are you running this PC with no protection??? Don't you care about your personal security and the health of your PC?

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Personal Security.... I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 in late December, because of my Vista Operating System and Windows 7 being a Pro edition, I had to do a clean install - which meant I started fresh. Plus, my antivirus program had JUST expired right after the New Year, around the same time that I picked up the redirecting. I have a copy of my new 2010 antivirus program but I've chosen to not install it till the problem was gone because I was paranoid that something would happen.

I will try out the TDSS Killer and report back with results. Thank you very much!

OK, I'm not sure if I ran the TDSS thing correctly or if it's just my computer. I followed your instructions: extracting the files to desktop, making sure the .exe wasn't in the folder but on the desktop, Opened up command prompt to get the RUN, copied and pasted the code you gave me (the entire code in bold), and the whole thing lasted 2 seconds. It told me to press any key, which I did, then the black run screen disappeared.

I went into C:/ and found the log file and I've attached it to this post.

Okay, TDSSkiller did not find anything.

We are going to be uninstalling your copy of FireFox and installing a new version after some cleanup. So do the below to save bookmarks:
    • Run FireFox and click Bookmarks.
    • Then select Organize Bootmarks.
    • Then on the next window click File and then select Export. Save the bookmarks.html file to your Desktop for later use in importing.
Now download and save the installer for the current version of FireFox but DO NOT install it yet. Get it here: Mozilla FireFox

You will need exit FireFox now and use Internet Explorer to continue with the below until we reinstall FireFox.

Start by uninstalling FireFox and then reboot. Do not skip the reboot.

After reboot, delete the below folders:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Users\Meagan\AppData\Local\Mozilla
    C:\Users\Meagan\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla

Do not continue with the below untill you have found and deleted all of the above folders. If you have any problem with this come back here (using Internet Explorer) and explain.

Now reinstall FireFox from the file previously downloaded.
Import your bookmarks file. (similar process to exporting).
See if you still have redirection problems.

The redirections are gone! What steps do I take next regarding the software programs I downloaded per the READ ME instructions and further action?

    Hmm... an update....

No more redirects but HitManPro is still picking up a rootkit in my C:\ drive (Windows>System32>Drivers) within the jolnirv.sys

(The other anti-virus programs do not pick up this "rootkit".

And my computer has started to crash occasionally (screen turns black, which forces me to shut it down by holding it onto the power button then re-starting it).

    Any ideas?

Not true. SUPERAntiSpyware said it found and removed it in the log you attached. Also ComboFix stated it deregistered the jolnirv driver so it appeared that it was fixed. It either came back or never really was fixed.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I've attached my ComboFix and MGTools logs. The redirects haven't come back at all. My computer hasn't crashed/froze since yesterday so I'll do a bit of a wait-and-see over the next two days to see if anything has happened.

Do the logs tell you anything?

    You're logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
