    I am experiencing the same problems others on this forum are having and it's my fault for visiting questionable web sites. Now, I am paying the price. Learned my lesson, never again!
    I have followed the steps for malware removal and cleaning of my computer up to and including combofix. It seems to work much better now, but there are still problems. I am attaching my logs. Hope you can help.

    We still need the C:\MGlogs.zip ---> from running the C:\MGTools.exe

    Not sure I did this right. MGtools loaded to C:\documents and settings\our computer\desktop. when I clicked on the icon to uninstall to try again, the program took off and started running. So, here is the MGlog zip file that came from that run.

    Open your C:\ drive and drag and drop MGTools.exe directly onto that. So you have C:\MGTools.exe.

    Now, please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Please follow these instructions to reset your proxy setting. Change Proxy Settings.

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\Documents and Settings\our computer\Local Settings\Application Data\llwfuqa

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Tim,
    This was quite a daunting task for a non-computer person, but I think I've done it. Thanks for your patience.
    The computer seems back to normal now. I made about 10 google searches and they all went thru. I enabled AVG and turned windows firewall back on.
    Wasn't sure about the proxy setting so set it up the same as my wife's laptop that works off the wifi router (automatically detects settings and no proxy).
    The files were successfully added to the register and the MGlogs should be attached.
    Hope everything looks good and we are ready for the final clean up.

    The registry keys did not get reset. This could be that you may need to reset your router to factory settings. But first, lets try it again.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB}]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\tcpip\parameters]
    "DhcpNameServer"=""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\controlset001\services\tcpip\parameters]
    "DhcpNameServer"=""

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now right click your ethernet connection / properties and check the tcp/ip properties making sure that the IP address and DNS settings are both on automatic discovery. That there are no settings in the DNS settings box.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Ran combo fix as requested.
    Could not find the ethernet/connection/properties. I have Verizon DSL.
    My links are no longer working? reboot? I'm shutting down for the nite anyway.
    attaching requested files.

    Thanks for sticking with me!

    Combo took care of the registry keys. You should not be having any redirects now. As to not seeing links, that is due to ADBlock in your FF settings. See this link:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=217871

    You can either whitelist MG's or use IE.

    What issues are you still having?

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Resolved the link problem by resetting the IE web pages (don't use FF).
    Still having problems with google, but slightly different. When I click on a search a blank page comes up, (white screen) when I try a second time it goes thru. All else seems to be working.

    What did you do to reset your IE settings?

    Try this:

    Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

  13. yrral66

    It works! most of the time, still get an occasional white page and have to reclick the link.
    went to "tools-internet options-programs" and clicked on "reset web settings" to fix the link problem.
    Will begin the clean up in about an hour unless I hear otherwise from you.

    Tim,

    The virus is back! I completed the final steps per instructions and everything seemed to be running fine. I then ran AVG and Spybot scans. They came back clean, so I re-enabled the restore points. A few hours later I turned on the computer and the search engine links were redirecting just like before.

    To make matters worse my wife's laptop is now infected and we don't browse any of the same web pages! How can this be! Is the infection somehow transmitted back thru the router? I did use the laptop to follow instructions and download the fixes. could the USB flashdrive be the culprit? The only programs on it are the ones I dnloaded per instruction for repair.

    My desktop is a Dell 3000 32bit ,running windows 6 with AVG.

    The laptop is an ACER 64bit, running windows 8 with MS security essentials.

    Appreciate any insight you can give me on this new development.

    The problem is in your router itself which is why both PCs (or any other PC put on your network ) would show the problem.

    The infection you had/have is known to infect router hardware. You need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

    You will then need to redownload and run MGtools and attach a new MGlogs.zip file so we can make sure that the registry has not been modified again. You may need to clean your wife's PC ( in a new thread ).

    Re-set and reconfigured the router. Computer seems to be back to normal, all searches going thru.
    MGlogs attached.
    I'm afraid to turn on the wife's laptop, if it's still infected will it re-infect my desktop?

    If she has been using it during this period, you would know that it was infected as it would have the same symptoms as your desktop. To be safe, I would download MGTool.exe to a flash drive, disconnect her from the router and transfer the MGTools to her system. Run it and attach her log to your next reply.

    Dis-abled wife's laptop from internet as suggested and ran MGtools.
    Here is the run from MGtools. Had a heck of a time finding the zip file. Don't like IE8.
