In South Africa it's chips & chips - like in Australia.

 

That isn't Australia, it is New Zealand. In Australia it is chips and crisps, like the UK. It was an education when I lived there and I had to learn what words to use to get what I wanted.
Fortunately, in the family I lived with, the woman migrated from the US 30 years earlier so she helped me with using the correct words.

Hmmm....I've lived in Melbourne, Australia all my life (since the 1950s) and toured around every state of Australia and never heard potato chips called crisps anywhere except by visiting poms.........you weren't hanging out in Australia with poms by any chance?
The big conundrum over here....are potato cakes called potato cakes or scallops? In most states if you ask for a scallop you get a fried crustacean in batter but in NSW and parts of Queensland you get a potato cake....BTW a potato cake is a slice of potato dipped in batter and deep fried. In NSW if you want a scallop that is not a potato scallop then you need to ask for a fried seafood or a shellfish scallop. First time I ever went to a fish & chip shop in Sydney, NSW (I was about 19yo and naive), I ordered a piece of flake (gummy shark) and $2.50 of chips and 4 scallops....imagine my surprise when I opened up the package and found 4 potato cakes instead of fried scallops and when I went in to complain about their apparent mistake I was treated as if I was the stupid idiot....DOH!

 

I lived in Baulkham Hills, NSW. (about 32 km away from Surrey Hill)
It was bought out by PepsiCo in 1998. Perhaps it became "americanized" then and crisps changed to chips.
I lived in Australia in 1971-1972 and crisps was printed on the bags.

Never ordered scallops nor potato cakes. I stuck to prawns, otherwise known as shrimp in the US.
Just like in the US. In my part of the country we say soda for a soft drink. In other parts, you ask for pop. So depending where you travel, you ask for the same thing by a different name.

 

Baulkham Hills is a now a very nice upper middle class suburb and real estate there is now quite expensive.
I have friends that live in Annandale, NSW and another friend who has a townhouse at Bondi Beach, NSW and their mortgages would make my eyes water My brother is an air traffic controller and when he worked at Mascot Airport he lived in a high rise block of flats right on Cronulla Beach but after four years of the Sydney rat race, he transferred to Tasmania where he bought a big house on twenty five acres for a bit less stress in his life and it only cost about one tenth the price of a tiny townhouse in Sydney.

Yeah prawns and also calamari rings are also favourites and let's not forget the dim sims and chiko rolls.....yum

Hmm....I was a teenager late 1960s and early 1970s and I can only remember Colvan Chips, Samboy Chips and Smiths Chips if they were packaged in Australia and Smiths Crisps if they were packaged in Great Britain. I sort of remember there possibly being Panda Crisps in NSW when I visited my brother in Cronulla in about 1974 (first time I drove to Sydney) but it is so long ago I am not sure.....I must have "old timers disease" lol
