For your info. Got it today. The letter and link below says it about all. Did download it from the MG Store last year August to try it out and removed it shortly thereafter. Hopefully all of us who downloaded free or paid software from this Co. won't get affected too much. Name and address were affected.

    Dear Ashampoo customer,

We are writing to you concerning an important issue. We regret to tell you that we also detected an unauthorized access to one of our server systems. We assume that the attackers were able to purloin data of customers. Sensitive data such as billing information etc. is not affected by this, because Ashampoo does not store this data.

We summarized all pieces of information concerning this incident for you and would like you to read the following website: http://www.ashampoo.com/datatheft

    Yours sincerely,

    The Ashampoo-Team

    Hi Oma

Cheers for the heads up, it seems a few companies of late are having data leak out like a rusty bucket! the Epsilon fiasco was one notable.

I am not sure if it is related to this data leak story and i do not want to hijack your thread Oma.

about 5 or 6 weeks ago i received an E-Mail from a company called Ace Translator which i have found out since that it really exists.

I am no longer able to find the actual E-Mail any more but it was "We have traced your IP address and it would appear that you have used our software with a fraudulent key and if you do not buy a legal key within 7 days we will pass our information to the relevant authorities" now i had up till then never heard of this company and was curious about how they had traced my IP having never used the application.

There was an E-Mail address so i sent a reply explaining i had no knowledge of their application but would they please explain how they managed to get my E-Mail address from my IP ??

I am still waiting for a reply.

BILL, Personally I would have put that kind of email away as spam immediately. :-D Sounds suspicious to me because it's quite threatening and probably pfishing for info from you? What info did they request from you? Yeah, how did they get your email addy?

Now these hackers are sending out fake emails to Ashampoo customers with attached PDFs which are malware. You can find Ashampoo's official/genuine customer letter in the link. http://www.ghacks.net/2011/04/22/ashampoo-hacked-watch-out-for-fake-customer-emails/

    I got the same email.

It has been several years since I tried some of their software - don't remember what it was.

The same e-mail arrived this morning.

They must have a hell of a time informing all the e-mail addresses in their archive.

You too eh? Since I save all registration email I receive back from the vendors - free ones included - I saw that mine was the free WinOptimizer v6 with its date.
Yes, it must be BILLMCC66. This from their email: An unauthorized access to one of our servers took place. Therefore it seems to me that it was *only* 1 server that was hacked, one too many.
augie, Definitely, hope that not too many will click on the attachment when getting the fake email with the pdf. I'm keeping an eye out for it although I never click on attachments which I get from strangers. Prior to downloading any attachment, even from family, I have them scanned by my IP's Norton.

I save that stuff too, so I checked.
It was Ashampoo Burning Studio 2007 in February 2007.
