    Hi,

was hit recently (a couple of days back) by some malicious software. AVG, and Mcafee were no good, while was unable to install Trend Micro.

searched google for some help wrt braviax.exe (on of the visible malicious software), and bumped into this forum.

followed the steps (piously) as mentioned by the following thread 'Malware Removal Guide' by MajorGeeks Admin (chaslang) : http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

while apparently the System is behaving normal, barring the issue of windows scrolling on their own (could be due to a syntactic keypad malfunction), i wish that the forum personnel to verify if there is reason enough for me to relax and not to worry (on account of the malicious attacks).

while all 5 software cleanup steps appeared to have run clean, the MalwareBytes was unable to delete some of the malicious content (ran it twice). Attaching the logs for your reference ...

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have a few user accounts on this PC that are badly infected. The Munish Sawhney and Ruchi Gaur user accounts are in very bad shape.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 13

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgpp.dll (file missing)
    O23 - Service: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup (0123721250566089) (0123721250566089mcinstcleanup) - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\MUNISH~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\012372~1.EXE (file missing)
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    ran the instructions ...
please find the attached logs for your reference.

the system seems to be working fine ever since the first time i followed your cleanup instructions (barring the application windows scrolling on their own).

You did not shutdown your antivirus and firewall and also may not have updated ComboFix as required. Thus you ran in Reduced Functionality Mode which does not work properly for all fixes. You need to run the fix again after getting the current version of ComboFix and after shutting down ALL protection software.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

thanks for all your guidance, help and support in getting the malware problem on my computer resolved. And, thanks for improving my awareness on effective pc protection, and relevant tools.

i was just about to procure a branded anti-virus solution license when this problem struck. and, i could see that those branded tools (trial versions) were clueless and helpless at the time of this attack.

hence the pertinent question : what tools should one invest in / procure to try and keep one's computer secured ?

as i could understand the recommendations on this site : i should have an antivirus AND a firewall AND a REALTIME Anti Spyware. i was thinking of going in for Super AntiSpyware (paid) + Comodo Antivirus + Comodo Firewall. Would that be fine or having ONLY SuperAntispyware would suffice ? or would you advice something else ?

Try one of the free antivirus tools mentioned in the link I gave you to see how you like it. Try before buying is a good approach. If you don't like it, uninstall, reboot, and try another. Once you find one you like and the performance meets your needs, then you can show your support by purchasing it and you will get more features and better support.

I also recommend buying either SUPERAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes to get the protection they offer.

SUPERAntiSpyware is only antispyware. It is not an antivirus nor is it a firewall. Thus you still would need all 3 you mentioned.
