That is an excellent achievement! Jenna sure has come a long way, and I think it's wonderful that she's kept it up and took it to such levels! WTG! :) You must be a very proud Dad indeed. Wonderful pics and great vid.

    Yes ma'am!

Very proud indeed. Most of the people she started with have quit because once you hit blue belt, the complexity is at a whole new level. She is dedicated though, and I couldn't be more proud.

Well, to be fair, I made her practice that weapons form 3 times a day for two weeks straight :)

She slowed down for him, because she was supposed to be helping him out with it.

I paid for a 1 hour private lesson with an instructor for her to learn it early.

You can't see it in the video, but she has a bruise on her forehead from knocking herself silly the day before.

The biggest thing is the motivate them. At this age, they aren't motivated enough themselves. They need the nudge to practice and study. Although I've had to work late hours for the last few months and haven't been able to with Jenna. This is her first belt that she did almost entirely on her own, with her own motivation. Very impressed.

I have the next week off, so I will be working with her with advanced sparring techniques from my own knowledge, to help her get a step up for her next belt. She also has moved from chucks and is now focusing solely on sword. She has a boken right now, but I will be buying her an unsharpened katana soon for her weapons form. For the kumdos, she will still use the boken, because they actually collide with other weapons.

Congratulations, Jeremy - that's a helluva Christmas present.

There are a couple of people here that I'd like to see Jenna practice on...:boxing

Congrats Adry, what a great achievement :cool
Isn't it so rewarding being a parent when you can see the hard work and dedication of your kids turning into their own milestone achievements? :-D

Is black belt the final goal and how long might this take? Do they have any direct contact bouts for grading? If so, then I imagine there would be a few injuries on the way?

Best wishes and good luck to Jenna on her journey forward :cool

I'm not sure what we will do after 1st Dan. I know she is interested in Judo, so we might transition to a second style for her. She is also in a junior leadership program which leads into the instructor program when she is 16 (6 years from now though).

It will take her 3 months to get to 1st gup, assuming that she doesn't miss testing ( a lot of red belts get stuck here due to complexity). Then 3 months after that, she will test for black belt, recommended (red and black striped belt). She then has a minimum of 6 months to review and test for new material PLUS all material from white belt and up to be tested to get to 1st Dan. Kids usually take 1-1.5 years to get past this point. I think I will probably have her ready in the 6 month period.

I've never been to a black belt testing, but I know that she must show proficiency in:

    Escrima sticks, strikes and forms.
    bo staff, strikes and forms.
    nunchaku, strikes and forms.
    sword, strikes and forms.
    judo throws and wrist locks
    gun and knife disarms
    self-defense techniques
    one-steps
    forms (aka kata)
    punches
    elbow strikes
kicks (and some are damn difficult)
board breaks with knife hand strikes, ridge hands, elbows, kicks, punches, etc.
knowledge of what each form means, what each belt means, and training secrets, history of art.
sparring that includes takedowns. Sparring below black belt is light and controlled, but I think for black belt, it gets hard and rough. I know one instructor broke ribs for his black belt testing.
She also has to write like a 1 or 2 page essay on what it means to be a black belt.

So, 1 year minimum to get there, although it might take 1.5 or 2. We will take our time to perfect it.

She keeps begging me to join her school, but I don't think my ego can handle her being a red belt and me being a white belt.

Yeah, you're right. He already goes into battles of wits unarmed, your daughter would probably make short work of him in that department too. :-D

Interesting moving to Judo. Judo is about unbalancing your opponent and then subduing them with holds and locks ;)
You also develop strong reflex skills in avoiding tactical parts of your body being grabbed which is good for a female. Judo is also good because you don't have to be really strong to be successful as agility and speed are of more value while still standing and when on the ground, there are plenty of effective holds that don't require a lot of strength too:)

FYI I did Judo for about 5½ years and it is really good fun :-D
We used the European/Australian grading system and I was grading from my blue belt to brown in Judo when I sustained a lower back injury that knocked me out of the sport. The instructor and I were demonstrating two throws to the rest of the group and I ended up landing half on the mat and half off the mat rupturing a disc and chipping a vertebra.:( Unfortunate accident:( The surgeons said I needed a spinal fusion at 17 years old but I refused and got through it with exercises and physiotherapy. After a couple of years rehabilitation I started playing squash again but couldn't risk the impacts of Judo. Even at my age now, long as I lift things carefully and not try to lift too much, I have very few problems:)

    Jenna should enjoy Judo ;)

Sorry to hear about the injury, what bad luck...

Yeah I think she will enjoy Judo, too. She likes being in control, and even now with just the little judo she knows now through her school, she seems to have a knack for it. She tosses people to the ground with ease, and she likes doing it :p

The boy in the video? She picked him up during a throw the day before like he was nothing :-D

Good start strength wise and get her to practice balance exercises when she is not standing over her feet (as this is easy). For example maintaining good balance at full forward or side reach and also develop some body core strength to be able to resist when someone grabs you from behind. You win Judo mostly if you can get your opponent to the ground first and then use your weight on top of them;) If you can resist being pulled off balance (especially backwards) then your opponent has to extend or lunge at you and you can then use their momentum against them with a throw :-D

I am sure she will work this out quickly. :cool

Hey Adry a little tip for you to remember for later (maybe about green belt)........when she becomes proficient at Judo don't let her grab your wrists near your hands ..... you will quickly find out what excruciating pain is ;)
Oh and there are some nasty spots on knees and elbows and careful if you have bare feet too :-D ............ just sayin ;)

After watching the video I would be worried if she came at me with the nunchaku (nunchucks). She looks quite confident handling them ;)

Might be something like "Hey Tim, come here and get some lumps" roflmao

That brings up an interesting point. She has some techniques that grab the wrist and hand, with the hand in a vertical position, she bends the hand forward at the wrist (which the wrist doesn't bend), which tends to...hurt.

Is that what you are referring to? They do that a lot at this school.

My 10 year old has started her Taekwondo journey, she is a white belt. I am very happy with her instructor and I like him a lot. The school is legitimate as I can assess authenticity. As a young man I studied Karate for 6 years and attained the rank of Shodan.

Here is a video It looks looks like they are now illegal in competition which will reduce injuries. I was in this sport 40 years ago and man this wristlock really does hurt if someone grabs you :cry

I just saw this on illegal locks and it looks like a lot of the locks used years ago are now outlawed :(

Here is another link that shows a primary method of getting your opponent off balance and you will see the progression of where you put your feet and the change in outcome using the same hold.
Using wristlocks close to solid walls can cause your assailant to knock themselves out on the wall LOL

    Here is another link

Why does only one link out of three display as a box inside the window?
I had the last link in the middle of the post and it made the other links confusing. WTF:confused

    Yep!

Thats what she does as well as what I described earlier.

The master at this school has a brown belt in Judo, but doesn't teach it for competition, rather incorporates it into the taekwondo for self defense. Works wonderfully. He also holds a black belt in combat hapkido.

Takedowns are allowed in sparring, but NOT wrist locks. Just too risky for injury.

I would have been brown belt but I couldn't finish the grading because I helped out the instructor demonstrating to a lower group.... bummer :(

Jeez you would want to stay on the right side of the instructor :boxing
.... unless you had a gun and got him before he came anywhere near you LOL
Just for my future reference, does taekwondo have any ranged weapons coz maybe a gun wouldn't be enough? ;)

Looks like Jenna has a good mentor with a wide breadth of skills which will be handy if she does external competitions :cool

As far as I know, TKD has no ranged weapons. I've only seen katana, bo staff, escrima sticks, chucks, and kama.

I don't think they teach kama though (saw a pair there tough).

Gun would be enough, as long as they didn't talk their way into disarm range :p

Just did some googling on kama.......ooohhhh nasty :eek
Wouldn't like getting sliced and diced by the katana either rolleyes

A young friend is a black belt 5th dan in karate (to go further he has to go to Japan) and he always carries a manrikigusari down the the leg inside his pants. Instead of chain he has shot cord and the weights are non metal so as not to set off any metal detectors. He had to use it once to protect his girlfriend and himself from a gang of five armed attackers while they were going back to his car after a night out in Melbourne. He brought down four of them (three went to hospital) and couldn't catch the fifth as he was so scared he turned into an Olympic sprinter. My friend only got hit once by the dude with the baseball bat (the first hit before he attacked) but none of the guys with the knives got near him. The police booked the gang and because of their priors three went to jail and the other two were heavily fined.
In Australia you can't even carry a pen knife legally in public so he would have been unarmed against 5 armed attackers so thanks to his martial arts skill he and his girlfriend were safe :cool
Some of my other friends said he was lucky but I disagree he worked damn hard for 12 years to earn that level of protection ;)
My other friends would have been stabbed and robbed and then be moaning to the cops that the crooks just ran away rolleyes
