Graphics Card not detected

So, recently, I replaced my computer's hard drive because the one that was in it was messing up. Wasn't starting, random computer freezing, all that bad stuff. So I replaced it, and only replaced the hard drive. After finally getting settled with the new hard drive, 90% of my applications and games that I was playing weren't working. I checked my graphics card, and it's completely undetected! Games that I play on my computer don't exactly demand a whole lot, but I can't even get Skype, Spiral Knights, or any other low demanding applications to work. I checked my device manager, and my Display Adapter was the only thing that was messed up. I had Code 12. Nasty bugger. Apparently, my Mobile Intel R 4 Series Family Express chipset didn't have sufficient resources for it to work. But if that was the case, wouldn't my games also not work previously before I switched out my hard drive? It's not making any sense to me. When desperate times call for desperate measures, I think I'm going to open up my laptop and reset my BIOS so it's returned to Factory Settings. Can I get some help?

You shouldn't have to open it up to reset the BIOS. Unplug it and remove the battery. Hold the power button for 30 seconds. That should reset the BIOS.

Do you have any yellow marks in Device Manager?

Which OS? I'd check the manufacturer's website to see if there is a chipset driver. It may already be installed but it can't hurt to double check.

By yellow marks you mean the caution triangles? Yes. Just one. On my Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Family Chipset. That's it. And before hand, I didn't have any problems before having changed my hard drive out. I'm also running Windows 7.

Get that chipset driver and see if it resolves the issue. It should be on the manufacturer's website. Post the model of laptop if you can't find the driver.

Or start windows update (just type wu into the Start/search box) and hit enter. Tell it to check for updates and then click the link for Optional updates. See if it has the chipset driver in the list.

Well I would love to post the driver, but due to Code 12 forcing the details to only saying, "This device does not have enough resources to operate" or something along the lines of that, I can't. My computer is a Compaq Presario CQ62. I'm looking into it now.

There are three drivers available http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4212454#N274

I think I would start with the Intel Identification one even though the OS seems to know which chip is there. The other two can't hurt. If you still have a yellow mark try Windows update or see if you can just right-click the device and click Update Driver.

I'm not very good with drivers so if anyone has input please jump in. :) It may not eliminate the Code 12 problem but I think we should take it out of the equation.

I just say that you have already been addressing this problem in another thread.

I would uninstall the current driver. Install the Intel chipset identification utility. Reboot and see if Windows will automatically download the driver.

Intel Identification? Don't see it anywhere...Under which category is it? And I know my drivers are updated. I check daily with two different programs and I do it myself. That proves how annoying this thing has become.

I see Intel Chipset Installation Utility...Not Identification...

ALRIGHT we have an issue. There is some paranormal crap going down on my computer. I downloaded the drivers and downloadables that you presented to me, installed just fine. I completely uninstalled my original hardware/software from my computer, uninstalled just fine. All I had to do was restart my computer like usual. I restart it, boot up, check my drivers, the new one is there, the old one is gone. Great. I come here to thank you for help and say everything is alright, suddenly, "New driver software installing". I'm thinking, Ok, late on the update, must be something that installs when it starts up. It finally finishes, I go to my device manager to see what's up, my freaking old driver came back and took the place of my new one. I tried all of this again. Twice. Same exact process. New installations perfectly fine upon bootup, minutes later, it's been consumed by the one I just deleted. What the heck, do I do now?

Do they both have the same name " Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Family Chipset"?

How do you have this option set? Right-click Computer and select Properties. Advanced system settings from the left then Hardware tab and then Device Installation settings.

Nope. One was VGA (Video Graphics Controller) and the other was Mobile Intel.

That's normal. The VGA is just the default one. Then when it finds the Mobile chipset it installs that one. You are still getting the Code 12 and yellow warning?

YUP. Code 12. And the resetting the BIOS thing didn't work. So I'm thinkin I'll have to open up after all...

You should be able to get to BIOS using F10 or F11 on a Compaq and hit Set Defaults and then save the changes.

It just seems odd that it happened after a new install which seems like a Win7 problem. I only read a little about the problem but it has something to do with two devices using the same "memory" address. I'll take a look later tonight or tomorrow and see if I can figure out what that resource conflict means.

See what version of BIOS you have. There is this update that seems to address video memory. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=4212454&sw_lang= but I am not sure if it is related.

I hate to be a burden on you and have you do a whole lot for me, but I've already defaulted my BIOS. Numerous times. From the start up screen. Every time I do, my computer won't log in. Something about resetting my BIOS causes my computer to automatically system repair. So that's why I'm going to manually reset my BIOS through the jumper and restore my computer back to factory settings.

If you want to go back to factory then I would create recovery discs and then try hitting F11 during startup to get to the recovery options. You can use the recovery partition but if it doesn't work you have the discs as a backup.

The pics are from your manual
