I am going to buy a new computer and have been doing research on what to look for in terms of components.

I have read that the video card should be Nvidia or ATI but not Intel. I see that Hewlett Packard have started putting out computers with the Intel video graphics card.

    Which one is the better?

Any opinions on Intel versus AMD as the CPU ?

    Hello there.

what is the pc going to be used for?

    If gaming then what games?

    What is your buudget?

And finally what are your current pc specs?

:EDIT are you looking to buy a prebuild? Or build yourself?

As far as AMD, vs. Intel, I've always stood by AMD for affordability.

Also, I kind of swore off Intel after the whole Socket 423 debacle. Maybe someday, I'll forgive them. :p

AMD and ATI are my personal favorite combo, and I've never had a problem with either company's hardware when it comes to price, longevity, and durability.

As Burrell pointed out, are you doing a custom build, or "off the shelf"?

Remember, any piece of equipment is only as good as the care, and respect it receives.

    That means NO dust bunnies...

Thanks for your reply Burrell :wave

I am not a big game player. My present laptop is a Hewlett Packard Pavillion with Vista.

It has an AMD 64X2, 2.10 Ghz, 3GB of RAM and it is 32 bit operating system.

I am don't need a large hard drive and I was thinking of building a desktop but realized that it is more than I am capable of at this time. I would rather pay $900 to $1,200 in order to get a good laptop.

I would like one that is fast, with good graphics, and it has to be at least 17" in screen size.

    I have been looking at the HP - Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 17.3" Display / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive.

I should also add that I do streaming of Netflix, and will be getting an Internet Ready TV to connect to the laptop.

I don't mind going up to $1,400 but Windows 7 Professional is not the same as the home version. I definitely don't want microsoft office, but thank you for the suggestion.

I will check out tiger direct.

You could call customer service, and see if it can be "downgraded".

    Don't know, until you ask...

    HI again Melm

As i'm the UK and have never used any US retailers, are there any you prefer?

For i'll just use Newegg as they seem popular with you guys.

If you go for a self built desktop you'll get 10x the performance you can get with a similar laptop in that price bracket!

Anyway i'll give you a prebuilt desktop and laptop in your price range.

Unfortunatly it seems that newegg havn't released any SB prebuilt systems, would you be prepared t build one yourself? It's not hard and there are plenty of youtube videos to help you on your way! :D

    Laptop

Both cracking pieces of kit and i don't think you'd be dissapointed with either.

    Thanks Burrell.

I was thinking about building a desktop, but got cold feet. I had asked for some advice here and received some good information.

I might be willing to try. I am checking out the links you gave me. I am not too familiar with the Acer brand and I don't know anyone who owns one.

    Thanks again for your help.

Acer are a really popular brand now and have some really low return rates.

Unfortunatly i don't have the 10 minutes to spec a build yourself system now, but i will do so this afternoon (UK time 7pm)
