Graphics woes

As some of you may recall, back in July I replaced the video card in my machine with a MSI Nvidia GTX 465. I was happy with the card... until less than a month later, it's having SIGNIFICANT issues to the point where I want a refund for it (currently waiting on a response from MSI). Apparently, I'm not alone in this experience, based on reviews for the product (on Newegg).

Regardless, I think I'm just going to go with a 470, but I'd like advice from those who have had them... what brand/specific models have worked without a hitch, what ones haven't lasted, etc. I'm considering this one, based on the reviews, but I'm not completely sure. I don't want another short-lived card. I do not plan on using aftermarket cooling, water cooling, etc. YET (possibly in the future).

I have a full tower case with adequate fans/ventilation, a Corsair 1000W PSU, etc... not worried about other hardware issues.

I'd really like experience-based suggestions please.

    Hi

For model versions or makes then Gainward have been solid for me in many of the GPUs I have bought including this one HERE (I dont have this one in my personal PC but one I built for a friend and its not had any issues as yet, runs Windows 7 x64)

Thinking of getting one myself soon to replace my old Gainward GTS 8800

As for the one you listed Gigabyte is a good name and looks at if they have covered the cooling of that card very well.

Thanks for the response, Halo. The GPU you linked to looks good, however it doesn't appear to be sold in the USA... bummer!

I think I'll just go with that Gigabyte then, and hope for the best.

    Hi MCSMC

That is a bummer, the alternative I would personally plump for is one from EVGA ( that make great cards) and this 470 HERE (dont have one of these but know that EVGA are a good make from otehr cards I ahev used of theirs)

    Hey Halo,

Yeah well the reviews on that card list at least one DOA and one short-lived card (45 days). I don't argue that EVGA is a good brand, but RMAs are a real pain for me since I'm military stationed overseas (week mailing time minimum each way, plus I'm gone often doing exercises). If I had a spare graphics card so that my computer would at least function, I wouldn't mind as much... but I don't. So cards with DOA reviews I tend to shy away from. Plus, the Gigabyte seems to run cooler (again based upon reviews).

Either way, I ordered the Gigabyte and am hoping I won't be disappointed.

    Hi mcsmc

I agree with you on DOA and that where you are moving around (stationed) you want a reliable card, I hope the Gigabyte one works well and will you update us with a quick review once you have the card and used if for a week or so?

I dont think you will as Gigabyte make great mobo's so dont think their GPUs will be much difference,

    Hey Halo,

I'll definitely post a review after I've used the Gigabyte card a bit. I actually have a Gigabyte motherboard (old, but that's an upgrade that needs to wait) that's mostly been good to me.

Yeah have two Gigabyte mobos here still used (main desktop now is ASUS) and working perfectly. Look forward to your quick review of the card as it may help me choose a new GPU.

I have 2 geforce GTX470s and both run perfectly, they are fast (if a little warm) under full load and have never faltered.

So this is what i recommend.

PS I happen to know Augie has the same card and uses it hard so maybe he will have some input??

Mine are Nvidia as in the link i gave.

Nvidia is the chipset designer... however, the GPUs are manufactured by other companies (EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, etc., etc.).

if you click the link you will see they are "geforce" and you also have a link in that page where to purchase and the price.

I took a photo of one so you can see it.

I also have a GTX480 but that costs a lot more and the 470 is bang for buck better.

Well... interesting to say the least. When I click on the "compare and buy" link, it only offers the cards from other manufacturers. Yeah, 480s are definitely pricey!
