It's been coming for a while, wife is pretty tore up about it. Breathing is extremely labored. Has had a bad heart murmur for a while. She is taking him in at 330pm today.

He had us up all night long trying to breathe. Keeps having these almost choking/coughing spells. :(

I had to do that just a couple of days ago. The older dog could no longer stand up, so we took him in. It's not easy. :(

I am so sorry to hear this. Isn't something how our pets become part of our family. Ours are getting older now too, and I dread the day we have to put them to sleep...
We have 2 poodles who are spoiled..http://www.ageekiam.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Sorry to hear your bad news, man. Makes us all remember when it has happened to us. We get too close to our pets. It's a shame they can't have lifespans more in line with ours.

i really feel for you. i have been there more times that i care to remember. as far as i am concerned dogs are the purest expression of unconditional love. i have often wondered if they have such short lifespans in order to constantly remind us of this. my heart goes out to you.

That's so sad.....Like the rest, I feel for you and your family.
Animals are only here a short time with us so you have to spoil them.
They become part of the family, almost like they're your own children!
Back in October we had to put 2 of our cats down, within 2 weeks of each other! I'm still not over it. It's the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life.....
It's not the same when they're gone....
I wish you and your family the best through this sad time....

    BluesMan,

I really feel for you and your family, it is a very difficult thing to do.

Years ago, I had a yellow lab that I had for 17 years. It got to where he couldn't hardly walk, the vet kept telling me he was going to have to be put to sleep. I put it off as long as I could and even then went three different times before I could go thru with it.

I had a K5 blazer at the time that I took him in, I sold it two weeks later. Couldn't stand to get in the thing, it just reminded me of him (Major).

You guy's will be sad but your doing the humane thing.

Sylvia Browne says that one of the first things that happen to you when you pass through to the "other side" is that you are greeted by all of your pets in your lifetime... as strange and outrageous as that might sound, it's a very comforting thought, for me at least...

Thanks everyone. We decided to try some pills for a few days. Supposed to help with the fluid build up behind the heart and abdomen cavity. Also supposed to dialate things so blood will move easier. He definately has congestive heart failure. This is the last thing. If it doesn't work I am putting him down this weekend. Its worth a shot though. Some dogs improve greatly and live for quite a while on this treatment.

I hope your dog responds well to this treatment Bluesman. Pets can be so surprising at times when we think there are no options left. I hope this is one of those positive situations for you :)
