I am pissed! Firstly, my Vista partition stops working because I installed Alcohol 120% wrong somehow and now the XP partition I was using has gone out on me too!

The Windows XP load screen just keeps loading and when I try safe mode, it just stops after it loads a file and doesn't do anything.

    What do I do?!?! :cry

use the vista boot up option to recover the boot sector (via the dvd it came with)

Or use xp recovery console to repair the boot sector.

I went to ''Startup Repair' for Vista, and it said there were no problems.

Is the XP Recovery Console on the XP Disc?

The recovery consul is on the XP cd; its under the Support folder then click on Tools

I went to \support\tools - there's a few files and I can't find which one is Recovery Console.

That page's no help at all..... how do I find this "console" file? Is it normal CMD, is it on that disc? Where is it?! Roar

Once I've found it, do I type fixmbr?

That page is great help, not only does it tell you two ways to install and or run the recovery console it also gives you all the command lines to use, I know your frustrated due to messing up an install but no need to take it out on others who are very willing to help you?

But this may also help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654#3 and yes its a command prompt type window that you will see once you booted to the XP CD and have pressed R for Recovery Console.

Then type fixboot [drive :] > [enter] then press Y

and if that doesnt fix it yes then fixmbr.

I would also be concidering slaving that drive if you can, get any data off it and clean installing, if you cannot repair.

Alcohol 120% is not fully Vista compatible as yet iirc going by their Sys Req, must do research on these apps before installing, but version 1.9.6.4719 they say is compatible, but not all software maybe compat with all system setups.

Umm..... I selected drive E (the one I wanted to fix), but when i put it fixboot it asked me if I wanted to fix drive C. I restarted, and felt like booting the partition with problems and it's working. Meh. :p Thanks!

Is there anyway to fix Vista except reinstalling it?

Ah good, completly forgot to re-check this thread, did it just start working after a few re-boot? or a repair of the MBR

Now you will be in line for upwards of 6 vista updates today! One is for Software compatability.
