depends on which distribution of linux you have, whether or not you downloaded the source package or RPM package for GTK. If you downloaded an RPM all you should need to do is double click on it and enter your root password if prompted and whatever package manager you have should do the rest.

If you downloaded source, .tar or .bz2 then you need to unpack it with file roller or ARK open a console window if you are running X, then cd to the dir with the extracted files are and type

    ./configure <enter>

wait for it to finish then type

    make <enter>

make will probably take a while, when its done, su to root by typing

    su <enter>
then enter the root password, if you are not in the dir with the extracted files, cd back to it and type

    make install <enter>

if all goes well and all the depend. are met you should be good to go. Hope this helps, I'm kinda new to linux myself so if I missed anything, fell free to correct me guys.

extract the source tarball to a folder on your desktop (assuming your already in Gnome or KDE, then open a terminal and type

    cd /home/XXXXX/Desktop/gtkXXXXX <enter>

replace the XXXXX right after home with your username and replace the gtkXXXXX with the name of the dir that you extracted. then run the commands I gave you in the previous post.

I would also recommend a trip to the bookstore. SAMS Teach yourself Linux in ten minutes is a great guide to getting started and learning some basic linux skills.

It says "Command not found" for all of those commands...
