Gulp! I've messed up my OE

    Win98, OE 6.0, dial-up modem
I installed Poptray e-mail checker and I guess it didn't like my system. I got "Socket error #11001, Host not found." And Outlook Express wouldn't work. I forget the error message I received, but it had something to do with another OE running. I got scared. I removed Poptray. Now, when I open OE and click Send&Receive, it hangs up on "Check for New Messages on Hotmail." I had configured OE to receive my Hotmail messages. What should I do to get OE working properly?
Here's that OE message: "OE could not be started because another instance of it is still running on your computer." It then advises to log off Windows and restart OE and, if necessary, restart the computer. I have rebooted twice and no luck.

Have you checked your startup items? Thats the first thing that comes to mind. Try StartupCPL from our Admin Tools sections, it shows all possible startup items including registry.

Thank you, Major Attitude, for your reply. I decided to try one more time by shutting down my computer and restarting. Darned if that didn't do it. Thanks again.
BTW, I'm still looking for a way to get notification of new mail without opening OE. Didn't there use to be an envelope icon in the right portion of the system tray that you could click to see if there was new mail? I don't have one. I have a shortcut to OE that I put in the left portion of the tray, but it's just that--a shortcut to the OE window.

No, Outlook Express does not minimize to the tray. There is a tool that does this for you. All this does is allow you to minimize Outlook to the tray, so its running and checking and notifying, but without taking up taskbar space. Hope it works for you:

Im suprised another reboot worked, it may have gotten stuck on the startup "run once" which is why I suggested something like startupcpl, but glad thats done with :)

    Can't find StartupCPL

Well, now ... that reboot didn't fix my problem after all, because it's back. So I'd like to try what Major Attitude suggested, but I can't find StartupCPL in the Admin Tools. I do see StartEd, a shareware program. Is that it?

I recently found RegCleaner could remove an item nothing else would, try that first:

Look for the blue tab, second over that says Startup.

Another place to look might be in your services, if your familiar with that. Start, settings, control panel, administrative tools, services and look for poptray or similar.

    incredimail

I switched to incredimail for eye appeal and ease of use. Whe i had trouble with oe i used to remove the account and then add it but if you only save your addresses in oe and not your mail account itself u lose 'em

I use this as a e-mail checker, e-Prompter . Nice little freeware program that checks most all types of accounts without running OE. I've had no problems with it. Sit in the tray and flashes the number of e-mails in each account being checked. The link gives a full rundown.
