Got my new custom grips in for my 1911. New style of grips the guy is working on, am testing them for him. They feel great! Will hit the range Sunday. These are made from Afzalia Burl. They look more red than orange in my picture, was tough to get a good shot showing the wood. Old grip is in the picture to show the difference. Me likey. :guns

I, myself, have always preferred the knurled finish. Less slippage for a more solid grip.
Smooth finishes always seemed to cause some drift when my hands started sweating from prolonged firing sessions.

That is a good point hrlow. But these look smooth, but have a bit of texture. Plus they just feel great, and look purdy as well. Will see how they perform at the range. I think having the front of the grip texturized would work better for me. (metal part of the grip extending from the trigger guard to the mag well.)

You mean the front hand guard? Lots of different styles and sizes. What size gun do you have? They come in the basic plastic up to high dollar railed options. What kind do you want?

    @ Bill.

Sure, the old grips are functional, but my new grips is sexy. If I miss a target, I can hypnotize it with the cool wood patterns... :-D:-D

Plus, these are a new model the guy is working on. Kinda a cross between the slim grips and regular sized grips.

Just as a side question for ya Bill, when you used that 1911, did you shoot one handed or with two? If with two hands, thumb on top of or under the safety?

always two handed with military ammo the kick was huge.

Aww, they don't kick that bad! LoL Was wondering, have been changing my hand position around trying different grips. I saw where some former US Marines were trained to shoot one handed. Many that learned one handed, shoot tow handed in the 'thumb low' position, where the strong hand thumb is under the safety. Others promote the 'high thumb' where the thumb is on top of the safety. Some argue why change your grip if you have to shoot one handed?

I am going to see which one works best for me. I think I like the thumb low grip. A Ford vs Chevy thing I guess. :cool

You know im not quite sure on the size but the front grip is what i want to replace. Ill take a look at it. 45 is a nice gun with a big bang but im a sucker for the 9 mill. I really like the accuracy it gives.

    Whats your opinion on reloads?

  11. BILLMCC66

    BILLMCC66 Bionic Belgian

My thumb was always on top of the safety it made it easy to pull the hammer back because i always had a round in the chamber.

  12. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

.45 is a accurate round also... Reloads are great if you are into that kinda stuff, powder types, velocities... I am not that organized, would be afraid I would double charge one and blow up my gun. :-D I will by factory reloads from reliable sources.

What fore grip is on your AR now? And what kind do you want? The quad rail metal ones look nice, but they can get heavy. I went back to the stock plastic.

I only need to cock the hammer if I am dry firing. :-D Keep mine in what I think is called 'condition 1' mag loaded, one in the pipe, hammer cocked, safety on. Thanks for the info though, always good to hear from people who have experience. I will be trying a couple of grip styles next time I go to the range.

When I was in the Military in Basic Training (1970), we had to train and qualify with the Colt .45ACP.
Qualifying was done in a long field. Brush about 2 1/2 feet tall and paths going downrange.
Pop-up targets were randomly triggered from the tower. Stayed up for a max of 3 seconds then dropped. Sometimes 2 targets at a time. Those were up for 5 seconds max.Sometimes on the left. Sometimes on the right.
One handed shooting for that movement style. Pistol held at Port Arms until a target comes up, snap down to aim and fire off 1 round per target, then back to Port Arms and continue walking.
Score of 28 out of 32 was my average.
Targets were anywhere from 15-30 yards from you.

Now that sounds like fun. I am looking into a private shooting club that has a more active shooting area rather than a static range. So, when shooting one handed, thumb over the safety, or under it?

Hogue make a nice wrap around grip with finger groves for 1911 which has a traditional type checkering

While I generally like Hogue, my 1911 grips shall be wood. :major Especially since mine were hand made by a fellow shooter in Ohio.

He makes some nice stuff. Larry is a cool guy. Much less money for them compared to some sites. http://diamondwood1911grips.com/1911-grips

The reason we did not do it "condition 1" was that when on quiet ops the safety was always off and if you needed to cock the weapon you just put it under your armpit and gently pull the hammer back.

Incidentally my high thumb method was good for me but i have had a couple of slide bites from that and the scars are there today.

Never noticed where my thumb was.
Just got a good solid grip that felt right and was comfortable to use.

I was going to go looking for my thread, but since there's a new gun one, I'll leave this here. I was refunded my security deposits for water and sewer over the weekend and thought I'd turn it into a little security for myself.

It's a Cobra Derringer in .38 Special with a change out barrel in .32 H&R Magnum. I'll probably always have the .38 on it, but if someone knows any reason I should try the other, I'd like to know.

I like those new grips Fred, by the way. And I'm finding out the pistol purchasing is rather addicting. Far worse than tattoos. :major

Should always be 2 hands Fred, you see when in the Military it's more likely the paper target guys will shoot back at you when you fire at them. So 2 hands for more acuracy is a good idea ;)

Also I have to agree with Bill, I prefer the original style, never liked wood on guns, like the old AK47's don't look near as mean as the newer metalled out versions. Just personal preference though.

I don't even have one :( they wont let me buy a gun here.... aparently I need some sort of paperwork :-D

The ideal stance is feet apart both hands on the weapon held in front of the body with both eyes open. just like the police in the US are taught.

One handed John Wayne is not condoned.

But as Ned says when they are shooting back it is not always possible to get the perfect stance.

  25. Triaxx2

    Triaxx2 MajorGeek

The best stance is the one that kills the other guy.

  26. hrlow2

Bill, that may well be OK for target shooting when you have time to assume the posture, but I was trained in the combat style of the Military at the time.
What are you going to do?
Say "Wait Mr. VC. Let me get set."?
Are you going to stand still while he gets into position?

OK, thread necro.... What if one hand is wounded? 2 hands is optimal, but, what if your dominate hand is incapacitated...
