Best thing to do is to contact your IT department at college to get the correct connection information. There may be security or authentication protocols on the wireless connection that you need to have.
Alternatively, Start | Control Panel | System and Maintenance | System | Device Manager (Device Manager is located under "Tasks" in the left hand column of the "System" menu).
Expand network adapters | Right click wireless adapter | choose Properties | scroll for channel selection and change to each channel and try to connect. There are 11 channels available.
    Hope this helps.

i didn't know that you could actually set a channel on your adapter? i know on your router you can designate a channel, and/or enable channel scanning (something like that). how are you trying to connect? are you using your wireless adapter s/w (software), or are you using the windows s/w to connect? you also need to make sure you have the correct p/w (password), when you try to connect to a secure network. can you take some screenshots for us, so we can see?

if you take some screenshots, i want to see wireless networks, and how/what you are trying to connect to (we don't want to see your pass, etc), and any error messages. also, anything else that you think might help. g/l, sos

The channel selection should be on the Advanced tab under properties.
May be under a heading such as IBSS.
(@ sosaman - I've got 2 different Linksys wireless adapters and both are capable of channel selection.)
