First of all, thanks for the fantastic malware removal guide. Yesterday I was attacked by a "Jorik Fraud win32 Trojan" and after trying some less than succesful options, the Majorgeeks guide finally seems to have solved it.

Two things that I want to say/ask:

    1) Maybe this could be a helpful addition to the Malware guide as I did not see this in there. When I wanted to install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware I renamed the file to mb.exe as described in the guide. All went well until the final step of the installation, where the program asks under which name you want to save the program. I leave the name as suggested (MalwareBytes Anti-Malware) and at the very last step I get en error which says something in the lines of: "error, could not complete installation". Then I tried again, but this time, I chose a random word for the installation folder and program name and this time it worked!

    2) So because of this guide and numerous other attempts that I had tried previous to this guide, I now have probably 10-15 virus/anti-malware programs installed. Is there any harm in uninstalling them? which ones should I keep?

    Logs are attached.

Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!

I have also attached the MBRCheck log.

Another interesting thing is that the SUPERantispyware program took the most time by a big margin (nearly two hours) + it was the first step in the procedure, and it found nothing!

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks, Fearo!

Only a few traces left of infection.

Re-read step #2 here: READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide

I recommend keeping Ad-Aware as your AntiVirus/SpywareProtection. Below are my recommendations on what you should uninstall.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4746/programsandfeatureswin7.gif From Programs and Features (via Control Panel), please uninstall the below:

    • Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 22 <-- is outdated
    • LimeWire PRO 5.2.13 <-- If you did not pay for it, definitely uninstall. P2P programs are also a gateway to getting infected
    • Spyware Doctor 8.0 <-- If you did not pay for it definitely uninstall

http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7284/yse.gif Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double-clicking it (Vista and Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
Note: This is actually Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4
Choose Do a system scan only and select the following lines but do not click fix until you exit all explorer windows and all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
After clicking Fix, exit out of Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4

What is this file doing on your desktop? C:\Users\FEARO\Desktop\u1017.exe
Do you know what it is? If not, please delete it.

http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/3005/combofixicon.gif Now we need to make use of ComboFix by sUBs
    • Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop but do not run it!
      • If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
    • Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:

    • Save the above as CFScript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you must exit all browsers now before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe.
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • This shall launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    • Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Note: If after running ComboFix you discover none of your programs will open up because you receive the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/6489/javaicon.gif Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/6835/baticon.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double-clicking it (Vista and Win7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
Then attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach items to your post)
    Notes:
    • This will automatically update all the logs inside MGlogs.zip
    • Make sure you click Accept on the License Agreement from Trend Micro HiJackThis - v2.0.4 twice if prompted.

LET ME KNOW HOW THE PC IS RUNNING AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED THESE STEPS
Also let me know if you are experiencing any issues with hidden/missing desktop icons, start menu, quick launch, anything missing?

Hi thisisu, thanks for the reply.

I did exactly as you told, here are the logs.

P.S. Yes I do know the 1017.exe file. It's a type of proxy that allows me to watch video's that you otherwise can't watch from outside of the US. Can this be dangerous?

Edit: I also re-read step #2 about deleting antivirus/spyware software, but it doesn't specifically say if anything can go wrong by doing that. For example, what happens to the quarantained files of a certain antivirus after you've uninstalled it?

    Thanks for the help!

You're welcome. Your latest logs are clean.

The quarantined files are also removed whenever you uninstall the AV program. Some AV programs will prompt you before hand and make sure you want proceed but yes it is safe to proceed.

As long as you know what it's for I do not think it's dangerous.

Are you having any other malware related issues?

By the way you never answered:
If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Alright, thanks again for the help.

I do not see any signs of malware at the moment, so I think I'm good.

Most of my things seem to be back where they were, although there is one thing missing. Picasa 3 seems to have vanished from my computer. But I still seem to have all of my pics.

  7. thisisu

    thisisu Malware Consultant

It is still installed but the type of malware you had hides desktop shortcuts/start menu/quick launch/pinned taskbar items.

It also looks like ComboFix put these shortcuts in their quarantine folders.

Can you first see if c:\program files\picasa 3 exists?

You will probably have to recreate the shortcuts you desire (desktop, quick launch, etc) from here.

I just checked and I can't find the Picasa 3 folder.

Thanks, but by using my computer again I've noticed that it wasn't the only program that I can't find anymore. for example 'paint' is also gone. Is there a certain program out there that can check which files/programs have been hidden through malware?

    Thanks again.

Is it safe to run the Unhide program? Like, is there any chance that any previously unseen malware could come out of the temp folders?

I ask this because I can't do option 2 (don't have these folders) and option 3 seems rather difficult and a lot of work.
