Hal.dll missing need to retrieve pics on users desktop

Hello, Im new to this forum so hopefully I am in the right place.
I need help with a windows xp issue im having. My pc was acting up so went into a restart...which then lead to <windows root>\system32\hal.dll missing or corrupt ...please re-install.
I do not have the windows xp recovery disk (sony did not provide with purchase) so to try and retrieve my pictures before I did a full restore, I slaved my drive over to pull the data which would have worked had I not stored the picture files on my users desktop that require a password to login to the different users accounts.

Is there anything I can do to get these photos from desktop and my pictures??

The problem lies within your boot ini file...

here's is a way to repair it

If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured

1. Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4. Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5. Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

If you don't have a Windows Xp disc maybe you could orrow one from a friend or family?

 

If the drive is slaved the access denied error can be remedied by taking ownership of the file/folder you need to access.

Be sure to read the beginning of the page. If XP Home you must start in Safe Mode.
