With my Radeon 8500LE 128MB, should I run half-life iin openGL or direct3D? For some reason, fraps wont give me the FPS in direct3D... And how do I enable trueform for this game?

Truform options are in the driver properties dialog... just set them the way you want and it should utilize it. For that card and game engine, I'd use OpenGL.... but I haven't had the game loaded on my rig since I've had my Radeon [I have the same card] I've been thinking about loading it up and playing the single player with HL2 coming out in a few months. I'm sure I'll get my ass kicked all over again :D

Haha, funny you should mention that, I got the Half Life bug again about two weeks ago (after i saw the preview movie for HL2..............better than porn). I've already beaten Half Life and Opposing Forces, now I'm working on Blue Shift........Half Life rules!

    Real easy answer.

ALWAYS choose OpenGL when available. Its better then Direct 3D and has been for years.

When DirectX 9 games are available, it's gonna smoke OpenGL 1.2

If Thead's solution still renders you with no console, then you'll have to edit your config.cfg file. Look for the following lines and make sure they are in the config.cfg file exactly as I've listed them (i.e. with quoatations):

    console "1.0"
    bind "`" "toggleconsole"
    bind "~" "toggleconsole"

Just copy and paste these three lines anywhere into the config.cfg file and your console will work. This is provided that you even need this advice, since what Thead suggested may be all you needed to do.

Huh, without the quotes? Can't u just give me the 3 lines to put in the config file? And where is the config file anyway? And how do I edit it.... heh.

Answering the original Q, I would definately run HL with OpenGL. The game engine (Quake 1 + enhacements) was designed with that in mind. DirectX execution has always been... flaky... for HL. On every machine I've used, DirectX causes "input lag" of about 200-300 ms. Say you turn left... and the game turns left 200ms later. Impossible to play.

About my last post, Powerz... if your console works, don't worry about it. Use the "~" key ... the one right below the escape key, while you're in game and it should bring down the console.

    Counterstrike and MOHAA

I found a CD-KEY and dled some mods, and, I used to read all thes ethreads saying how they have counterstrike problems, well I play at 6XAA and 16XAF and my system isn't that good, but I still get 40-80FPS, the only thing is, when there's smoke it goes down to 15-25FPS, what is up with this? Is it a driver problem or can I fix it? Does anyone else get this? MOHAA also slows down a lot with smoke.... What settings should I use for MOHAA to get decent (30) FPS?

There should be a way to disable or at least lower the detail of the smoke alone without having to sacrifice other graphics. There's all kinds of console commands for things like that... search the web for Half-Life console commands... you'll find plenty.
