If you're stuck for things to do over the long weekend (those of you in the U.S.!) consider going to see Hancock, because it looks hilaaaarious. In the midst of all these superhero movies this summer, seeing a movie that satirizes the genre while doing something new with it is a real treat. Add to that that I love Will Smith and Jason Bateman (from Arrested Development!) and this is a recipe for total awesomeness. See trailer below! ;)

I was really looking forward to it but early reviews are terrible. I guess it is good to lower my expectations some before I see it.

Hey, will smith hasn't failed on a 4th of july weekend yet, nor has he made a real stinker, I mean all his movies aren't great but at least not stinkers. ;)

I'm gonna go see it because I don't want to wait for DVD and find out I should have seen it on the big screen, that happened to me with "independance day" :(

Exactly!! This movie just screams to be seen on the big screen. The effects, the big action scenes, Will Smith himself... not to mention Charlize Theron is supposed to have some sort of secret in this, and I don't want to not see it and have it spoiled for me!

I missed seeing Men In Black in theaters, and I've sooo never forgiven myself. I'm certainly not making that mistake again.

Ignore reviewers... I never trust them, I almost always disagree with them. rolleyes

We just saw this tonight. It was pretty funny and pretty damn entertaining, which is what Will Smith does best. I'd say it was worth seeing.

lmao...we took our 12 and 9 year old girls. Um, yeah, not really appropriate for my 9 year old. OOps.rolleyes They really liked it though.

    Seen them both--
Kind of neat to see a few new special effects in the Wanted movie but the ending was weird.

I really liked Hancock it was a pretty neat film (an alcoholic pissed off superhero-- that's funny) I was ready to be disappointed after watching Smiths last attempt.(new york,virus-I cannot remember the name..LOL)

    My favorite line is....

" Go ahead and call me an &*%hole one more time!"

    just my thoughts

Read somewhere that Hancock was the third choice of name. Can't remember the original choice, but second choice was John Hancock and final choice was Hancock.

Second choice ( in OZ anyway) has a completely different meaning. No wonder they decided on Hancock. :-D

Ok so here goes my non-popular opinion...I didn't like it. Don't get me wrong, it was ok but I won't recomend it to anyone. And I was sorely dissapointed in Smith for his choice in this movie. Now let me explain...

Lots of parents out there watch movies/tv shows before their children to make sure it's something that they would let them watch (I personally am not one of said people but I do look at ratings). Will Smith has a reputation for family friendly movies. In fact, the reason I took my 11yo son to see it without checking it out first was because of Smith's "trademark" of being family friendly. Within the first few moments there was a cuss word coming out of a child's mouth...and that wasn't the only child who used the A word either. There is another later on who uses it quite frequently, as does Smith.

The character's language and behavior on top of the thick sexual tension (even if fleeting and momentary) on top of the use of the foul language coming out of children's mouths just left a sick taste in my mouth and I regretted letting my son watch it. I was also deeply disapointed in Smith.

I feel there should have been a parental warning on this movie (aside from the rating I mean) because Smith is in it...there should have been something like Smith saying "Hey, I'm branching out a bit...might want to leave the kids at home for this one at first".

Bottom line is, it wasn't a Will Smith movie...it could have been with some changes...but I wasn't happy.

My son, however loved it rolleyes

@ sebray hey, there's nothing wrong with your opinion, you are raising a kid, that means you have to look at things differently than us with none, I commend you for that ;)

It must be tough, nowadays a PG-13 is like a R from my 'day'

Yeah, I'd say this was more of a PG-15 movie. I wouldn't have taken my kids either if I had known it was going to be the way it was. Scene with the prisoners making Hancock mad....need I say more?? :eek

    Ah well, live and learn.

"I am legend" wasn't exactly a family friendly movie

and will smith has been in R-rated movies (six degrees of seperation, bad boys 1 and 2, ali, enemy of the state) but i guess that all of his more recent movies have been more "family oriented"

but just because an actor is in a few family movies doesn't automatically mean that all the movies that the actor is in will be like that.

but i do agree with LauraR, this movie should have been rated pg-15 (they could create a new rating, just for this movie!) or even R

Yep. I agree. You really can't go by an actor's other movies.

Actually PG-15 wouldn't be bad. :-D And not just for this movie, speculant. :p Just off the top of my head...."Click" with Adam Sandler and "Juno" would have been good ones for that rating. But whatever...I'm not that anal about my kids and movies. You really can't shelter them, they see all of it and hear it anyway.

Is that a "crack" about the prison scene in Hancock??rolleyes :p

I agree tho, you can't judge an actor by a few movies, Isn't there a site that lists the offensive stuff, so you can be informed before you go?

(NO, I'm not talking about the site that tells you where all the nasty stuff is, so you can find it faster:p)

roflmao I WISH I had thought of that! :p

Yeah, I'm sure there is. I just glance at the parental thing on IMDb though. I'm generally not all that worried about it. Usually, that works for me. Sometime, like with Hancock, I end up going OOPS. :-D

aye, you're right. I suppose I was being a bit ... selective with my memory (wait isn't that a guy trait??? :p ). Maybe PG-16 would have been better??? I just can't get over the fact that they were letting children cuss in the movie ....

Yeah... this, I feel, is a case of needing to do a little research before seeing the movie. Not even research, really, just checking up on it online. I think the premise of the movie itself does not lend itself to "family fun" -- a mean, disrespectful, alcoholic superhero who's so messed up that he needs a PR agent to clean up his act? That said, I tend to follow movies online really closely, so perhaps I knew more about it than the average person. But I pay almost no attention to the ratings on films, as they're almost completely arbitrary. I trust my own judgment when it comes to how appropriate films are (or aren't, as the case may be) for young'uns.

That said, I don't blame you, as it is a Will Smith 4th of July blockbuster...

@bigbazza: The original title was "Tonight He Comes," until they judged it too provocative. So they changed it. :-D
