Win98, 1st Edition: Too often, when I go Start/Shutdown/Shutdown, my computer hangs up. Ctrl+Alt+Delete has no effect. I have to hit the power button on the tower to get the thing to turn off. Any ideas?

Are you saying that the information you referred me to applies to Win98 1st Edition, which I have, as well as to 2nd Edition?

jujet84: I downloaded the Win98SE Shutdown Supplement, but when it came to installing, I got a message that it was not for my OS.
robo: I did an update check and found that I have installed the only Service Pack (SP1) that is listed. How can I tell if my OS is "essentially 2nd Edition"? Are there things that SE has that 1st Edition doesn't have that I can look for?
Maxwell: That site listing the 15 troubleshooting steps looks good. Part of my problem is that shutdown doesn't always hang up--maybe half to a fourth of the time--so it's difficult to tell if one of the troubleshooting steps has worked.
Once again, thanks to all who posted!
