Thanks for the best wishes. I've spent my time in front of my TV watching the Australian Open Tennis (Men's final tonight--should be a ripper) and the Fourth Australia v India Cricket Test.

Adam Gilchrist suddenly announced his retirement last night and it hit the Australian cricket world like a bombshell.

He made a quickfire 14 in his last innings. A real shame to see him go, but he has a young family (3 kids). Ah well, back to the cricket. No broadband for the last 36 hours. Don't know why, just got re-connected via ISP Tech help.

I hope all you Geeks down under had a great Australia day! :celebrate

I'd be interested to know it's history, and how you folks celebrate it overall. I hope it involves lots of fellowship, food, and beer!! :)

Kinda interesting how it came about.

It wasn’t until 1994 that celebrating Australia Day on 26 January really became established.

Historically, celebration of Australia Day originally started in Sydney, given that in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of eleven convict ships from Great Britain, and the first Governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove on 26 January and raised the Union Jack to signal the beginning of the colony.

In the early 1800s, calendars and the Sydney Gazette began referring to 26 January as The First Landing Day or Foundation Day which was celebrated in Sydney with anniversary dinners and drinking that later became customary, especially among emancipists.

By 1838, a proclamation of an annual public holiday for 26 January marked the centenary of the British occupation of New South Wales. And by 1888, what had begun as a New South Wales anniversary celebration was becoming an Australian one. The day became known as Anniversary or Foundation Day.

In 1930, the Australian Natives' Association in Victoria began a campaign to have 26 January celebrated throughout Australia as Australia Day on a Monday, making a long weekend.

And in 1988, the states and territories agreed to celebrate Australia Day on 26 January and Sydney continued to be the centre of Australia Day spectacle and ceremony.

These links show what events occur for Sydney’s celebrations in Sydney’s CBD http://www.australiaday.com.au/whats...spx?EventID=35

and on the Harbour: http://www.australiaday.com.au/whats...eyharbour.aspx which is really spectacular if you’re on the water and fantastic fun. You finish the day by anchoring your boat at the Sydney Ports Jazz on the Water concert…and dance the night away. (Had to miss out on my friend’s invite this year:(:cry)

It is a fantastic day out that continues with lots of bands playing into the night. :cool

Nah...not really late because we get a long weekend out of it, so many have continued with some form of celebration since last Friday...mainly like BBQs, catch ups, beach picnics (fine day for it too here), or just relaxing watching the tennis and cricket;)

Like I've always said, we'll grab any opportunity for a party/celebration:p
