I thought certain I had a mean virus and went through the removal instructions posted here very carefully. I found lots of crap and cleaned it away. Thought that was the end of it. But, my hard disk is working its butt off. Constantly looking for something, every 1 second, another disk address. Even when I leave the computer alone for hours, the disk addresses still continue. I hate it. I need to get the disk to stop. HELP. I checked Windows Task Manager and no processes are working while the disk is continuously going. I did HijackThis scan. While I am certainly no expert, it also looks fairly clean. Anyone know what is going on? What can cause a hard disk to constantly seek? (PhilliePhan suggested re-post to this forum so no need to remind me about double posts :) thanks)

There's tons of stuff that routinely tries to access the internet. Some good, some bad. These attempts cause hard drive activity. Are you downloading files from a P2P network? You might want to try a firewall like ZoneAlarm and deny permissions (temporarily). ZA will tell you what programs are trying to 'phone home'.
Also, try visiting doxdesk.com then click on "parasites". That will open a page which runs a detection script on your browser. If any are found you can follow their removal suggestions.
    Good luck.

Cool, thanks ZimPal, I'll try that. However, I am not sure it is an internet 'phone home problem' The Local Area Connection icon which indicates 'sent' and 'received' bytes is silent the entire time the disk is searching and searching...

    What OS are you running?
It could be something like MS updates (or anyone else who does the same) 'phoning home'.
That icon isn't very good at showing net traffic, I'd try something like NetPerSec or other networkd traffic monitor.
Also, do you have a background program like SETI or Folding running?
THey flog the disk about once a second.
As a quick disgnostic, I'd go to sysinternals.com and get both filemon and regmon. Filemon wil show you who is accessing the disk.
    Do the same with regmon.
