    Hi

I have a Toshiba Laptop which includes it's own health monitoring software but I also have several 2Tb and 3Tb external hard disk drives (Seagate mostly). I'm considering buying "Hard Disk Sentinel Professional" in order to have them monitored.

Just wondering if anyone has bought "Hard Disk Sentinel Professional" and if so what they think of it.

The software retails for around $20 (Softpedia 30% discount).

My laptop is a cheapie and rather slow. Here are the specs:-

    System Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
    System Model: Satellite C50D-A
    System Type: x64-based PC

    Processor: AMD E1-1200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 1400 Mhz(1.4)2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB

    Display Adapter RAM 384.00 MB

    Resolution 1366 x 768 x 60 hertz

I look forward to hearing what you think of it. (The software that is, not my cheap laptop).

    Hi my friend
the best way is running the manufacture's tool than any other software , but this software is very good , i am using the same as you , what is your hdd's model ?

    Start - Run msinfo32 - ok
Opening Components menu - Disks menu
    Third choice is the model

You could inform us about this

I've had the Pro version for 2-3 years now, I haven't had any need to use any Pro -specific features though. It's there should I need it, as I would have done over fairly long periods previously and I can set them up or check remotely in a few minutes if I do have to make a trip at short notice.

I currently have 4 internal drives in my main rig, 3 in my alt. rig, plus 1 external drive for each PC. That's 7 different makes of drives, all seem to be well supported and temperatures, SMART, TRIM status, etc read accurately by HDS, whether using Pro, Standard or Trial versions.

Also, in my limited experience, the HDS dev. is very quick to respond to queries and comments, probably to suggestions for improvements as well.

I've been having a look around for reviews and found an interesting discussion here: https://malwaretips.com/threads/is-hard-disk-sentinel-pro-safe.40994/

There seems to be a few users who question the reliability.

Also, in an August 2014 "in-depth" review on Softpedia they said CPU memory use was "significant even when it's in idle state".

As my Laptop is "low-end" I'm concerned Hard Disk Sentinel would have too great an impact on it.

UPDATE *** Just had a look at the system requirements and it says " External disks (USB or IEEE 1394) are NOT supported".

Using it to predict failure of my extHDD's was the reason for my interest in the software.

    Thanks for your replies anyway.

Reliability is based on SMART data (the drive self -reporting), if the data is incorrect, any software using it will be. SMART is all we have, we've long known that it's imperfect.

It runs on a low-end, 3GB RAM single core 2GHz AMD (~2007) here, not noticed any significant CPU usage, memory usage is also insignificant. Similar with an Atom 1.6Ghz 2GB netbook.

    Your "UPDATE" - *** o rly *** ?
    Hardware Requirements
    • Pentium or compatible CPU
    • 64 megabytes of system memory
    • 30 megabytes of hard disk space
    • One or more hard disk, solid state disk, hybrid drive (SSHD) with ATA (IDE or Serial ATA/SATA II/SATA 6G), SCSI, SAS, USB, NVMe interface.
See Hardware compatibility pages for supported hard disk drives, SSD models, disk controllers and external hard disks / enclosures / adapters.
Other type of external disks (IEEE 1394 or used in NAS enclosures and connected via Ethernet) are NOT supported because the hard disk controller chip in the external enclosure does not support the detection of hard disk status (S.M.A.R.T.) information.

I run HDS Pro as well and every USB drive, whether HDD or SSD, I plug into one of my USB ports is supported. They're in Oyen Digital and Orico enclosures and the SSD is a VisionTek mSATA.

I installed the trial pro version and tested it for a few days and found it suited my needs. I just had a look around the web and found it currently available via Bitsjour for 50% off so went ahead and bought it.

    Thanks for all the replies.
