I built my Shuttle PC about a year and a half ago and I've been having this problem ever since I built it. Every few months my HD will start chirping, stop spinning then start up again, and freeze/crash my computer. I've tried numerous Seagate drives in the box and I've had to get replacement drives due to bad sectors and all sorts of nasty effects of "hard drive chirping."

I have no clue as to what's causing my headaches. I've tried seagate drives, WD drives, all no luck. No idea whats up, but if anyone can help me out its MG.

    Specs:
    Shuttle SN95G5 v1.0
    1 GB Corsair XMS
    AMD Athlin 64 3800+
    BFG 6800 GT OC
    Seagate Barracuda 160 GB

If it is doing it with all drives it is possibly a bad connection between the board & drive. Try a new power cable & ide cable. Worst yet it could be the board itself.

This may seem simple ....is the hd completly mounted in the case? how is it mounted (position in case) and not near any extreme heat sources, these may cause early demise to your hd or the tips Hipster Doofus already recomended.
