Hard Drive copy/paste duplication

okay, so i've got my newly fixed computer
just fixed it yesterday and a few minor bugs still exist
but it hasnt worked in about a year, so im VERY happy about this

i have a new 500gb WD caviar 3gb/s sata drive.
then i have my old 160gb WD 300mb/s ide drive.

i have my old 160gb drive in a usb enclosure
that has ALL of my old things on it
this includes a 140gb music/vid collection
i'd like all this on my other drive
so my idea is.

i would hook up my 500gb drive to my dads eMachine
its running on vista and this drive would show as a secondary
i did install windows 2k on this and had to make a 133gb partition
i would remove the partition and format the drive in order to get
500gb free and open.
after this i would plug in my 160gb ide drive via usb enclosure
this is actually 123gb with a 25gb ish partition on it
now if i copy/pasted my entire HD from the 160 onto the 500
including the operating system (xp) and everything else
would this function as it did before?
i have some different hardware but
i would just re-install the drivers and overwrite them.
would it function as it did before?
maybe if i used a special program thats specifically for this would it work?
