I hope someone can help me here, this seems like the forum to check. I will add extra data when I can get home, check, and get to internet again. Sorry about the length

    OS: XP Service Pack 3
Infected HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10(not sure if thats the right beginning of number) 320GB
BSOD error codes: will edit as soon as I get home

About 2 weeks ago I contracted some kind of malware virus. It was one of those that says your computer is infected and popsup buy our antivirus. I searched the internet for specific details about it, but only could find what seemed like a similar, possibly the original form of the virus. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it was called because right after I found this info, windows would no longer load in any mode (normal or safe). I took the HD out, put it in an external case, booted from my old hd, and scanned the infected HD with programs via external USB. I used Spybot, AVG, Norton (definitions are a few years old) and that Malwarebytes program. None of these programs found anything on my infected HD.
My next idea was to use a Windows DVD to try to repair the installation, only to find out that my DVD rom drive has crapped out and will not open. Then I read how because you don't get the Windows CD standard when you buy a computer, they make a copy of the cd in the folder i386. I tried to run the program from there, but it said my windows version is newer and it wouldn't run.
From there I decided to format the infected drive, and then make a clone of the working one. I am using the program XXclone. I formatted, cloned, and then told it to make the drive bootable. Tried to boot from it, and it still came to same BSOD (its the one that talks about how you may have a virus, will post above later).
Decided to try it again. Once again I formatted the disk using XxClone and cloned the working drive onto the previously infected drive. During the cloning I noticed I keep getting "Delayed Write Failed" errors. Then right around the end it said something to the effect of "cannot edit Boot.INI file". I read on XXclone's site that about 50% of the cloned drives will not boot on their own without using the extra tools with the program. So once again I ran the make bootable function with all three checkboxes checked. Again added the test boot feature, and tried to load from windows. This time I received an error to the effect of "windows cannot load because hal.dll(not sure if this is exact dll name) is corrupt or missing. Please reinstall this file etc."
I don't understand where I am going wrong, and I just want to get this drive working again and bootable. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is more info necessary, just let me know. I will tell you whatever I can. I am so frustrated right now, and could really use some advice.

Since you have already formatted the hard drive in question, I have moved your thread to the software forum as this is no longer a malware issue.

When you formatted the drive did you do a full format or a quick format? You may need to do a full format as your disk sounds as if it has bad sectors. A quick format does not mark unusable areas. Doing a full format will mark any bad sectors as unusable.

I am not sure which kind it did. I am going to go home and make sure I am doing a full format, but I am pretty sure I did.

Maybe try Seagate Disk Wizard. It should give you the option of copying an image of the whole old/working HD to the Seagate 7200. (I believe this will only work if the old/working disk is smaller than the 320gb)

Here is a pdf user guide. Chapter 10 would be what you want to read up on.

I've only used this type of software from the HD manufacturer once several years ago but it worked fine for me at the time. The download site for the disk wizard software is here.
