Hard drive failded

    I have a 500 gig hd westen d external that quit working i thought it might just be the case or power supply removed the hd and installed it in a dif power supply that had a working hd in it and it wont do anything not spinning at all so my Question is this how do i recover the files or what other steps do i need to take very important files nees help thanke

    First (if you have a desktop PC with an extra SATA port on the motherboard), I would try connecting the bare drive directly to the PC. If the PC recognizes the drive, I'd immediately transfer the files off the questionable drive to a good one.

    If the drive still does not spin, you will have to assess the value of the files. On a drive that has quit spinning, the only other option is to use a professional data recovery service: The drive is disassembled in a dust-free "clean room" and the techs attempt to pull data off the drive platters (Do NOT attempt to do this yourself; even one speck of dust will ruin any chances of data recovery!). This is very expensive: If the drive is full, it can easily run between $800 and $1500.
