:cry I foolishly ate cereal and browsed the web on my laptop at the same time, and you guessed it i clumsily spilled milk over my laptop. Nothing appeared wrong since i sprang into action with a towel, but about half an hour later I got a bsod and my hdd was no longer being seen. i took out the hdd wrapped it in a paper towel and put it away for 24 hours. Today I put it back in and it was still not showing up in BIOS. The laptop does turn on and I able to boot a live disk, it's only the hdd that seems to have been damaged. I put the hdd into an external enclosure and connected it to another computer, but it also did not recognize that a hdd was there. So is there anything I can do at this point to save the hdd or is dead?

Get a new hard drive, and be more careful when eating or drinking anything that is liquid, around your laptop.

Urban myth is to put HDD into a bowl of rice as the rice will suck up and absorb moisture.

I would be cleaning the "contact" surfaces of the HDD with a Q Tip and alcohol.

Nope new hard drive the liquid could have gotten into the little tiny holes that the hard drives have.

I would not risk plugging that back into system.

I got a new hard drive, however there are problems. On occasion when I boot the computer it will not see the hard drive and I have to restart the computer a few times to boot properly. It also seems to be running slower. So does this mean there are problems with the sata connection? Is that replacable or should I just get a new laptop?

No, just possibly something else. Post the manufacturer & model# of the new hard drive. If you did a fresh install, it will take a few boots, to get the machine to optimize the boot process, to make things a little speedier.

I started using SSD's in my machines, since they can handle the abuse a little better, and are faster than platter drives.
