Don't know if this is a hard drive early warning symptom.

I keep hearing loud whirring sounds, which now are advanced to whirring and almost grinding sounds. The drive in use light kept going off, but after reloading Windows the drive still works -- just louder and louder.

Any ideas based on those symptoms?

Second that. Sounds like you should prepare for an imminent hard drive failure. The only other possible source for the kind of noises your describe would be a cpu fan or to a lesser extent a case fan. To be sure you should pull the side case from your machine and take a close listen and see if you can pinpoint exactly the source of the noise...........
