    hey all,
im trying to add a new hard drive for a friend. this will be their new master and the old one will be a slave.... to do this i need to clone the original onto the new one, thats no problem but it wouldn't let me use the new drive as a target, it was greyed out: so i looked deeper into it, and realised that the drive isn't acting as the others. In the microsoft diskmgmt.msc its showing as:

    Layout: Simple
    Type: Dynamic
    Filesystem: NTFS
    status: Healthy

and in partition magic the status is "none" and i cannot do anything with it because it says:
"The selected disk contains one or more partitions which cannot be moved.
To complete this task use the operations menu rather than a wizard" however when i click the drive, all options on the operations menu are greyed out.

    any ideas?
    thanks in advance

the fdisk util says something about the program trying to directly access the hard disk which isn't supported. am i doing it wrong?

All you do is put fdisk in when your computer is booting. Make sure that in your bios the floppy drive is listed first in the boot priority. :)

    "Type: Dynamic"

just a note, XP home does not support dynamic disks. and .. uh partition magic is way better than fdisk, last time I checked it doesn't do ntfs. use spfdisk or xfdisk, if you think partition magic isn't doing what it's supposed to do

ok its working but a small explanation of what im trying to do and what isn't working:

the guy has a 3gb hard drive, obviously this is tiny, but theres things he wants keeping...... so he has bought a 40gb hard drive..... im trying to clone everything onto the new drive using Acronis True Image.... but its not booting from this clone, im not sure why. anyone know?

i apologise, my last post was rather uninformative.... it does boot, but where the XP login screen would usually be.... it just shows an XP logo.... still in the style of the login screen but doesn't allow you to click a user. It works fine with the 3gb in too but im not sure if thats because its booting from the 3gb

You could install Xp on the 40gig one and move everything from the 3gig one manually from within windows. :)

    i fixed it :)

i changed the drive letters in regedit, because the large drive was D for some reason, even though it was set as master with the hardware.

anyways thanks for your help! its much appreciated
