Hard drive runs when offline and no programs in use

I have a XP Pro with all updates current, Zone Alarm (free) and AVG (paid) plus Spybot and Adaware. None have given any notice of a problem, yet I notice that at random times when the machine is off line and no programs are being used, the hard drive will start operating for varying lengths of time. The bottom tray, the one where programs show up while they are in use, is always empty when I check, but the hard drive is still operating.
Is this System Restore or some other legitimate program refreshing itself or does this sound like a problem? Thanks.

It most likely is ....there are always systems running in the background.
