    Hi,

I have an old Samsung PLS-31084A (1.08GB) that I recently took out of my first computer. I am wanting to get some files off of it and then ditch it, but it does not SEEM to have any jumpers... there is a space there... with nothing in it. It has two connectors, one for the ribbon cable and one for the power supply.
On the lable it clearly shows settings for "1 Drive," "Master" and "Slave." (J2 Setting? if that means anything?... to anyone?)

My old machine is just that... OLD, it can not handle other types of drives so that I could get my files some other way... they are too big for it's little floppy drive.

Another problem is that the old drive will not physically mount up inside the new(er) computer and I don't have the brackets to make it fit. Can I let that Samsung just rest in there temporarily?

I do not have the right cables... and I don't know if I could even use them this way, but...
On the back of my old computer there are two ports:
    IOIOI-1 & 2
They are nine pin ports (five in one row, four in the next) and seem to go to the mother board (not the one on the sound card... if it really has a sound card.)

Any way, I am at a loss here. Samsung was no help and I really want those files before I trash this puppy.

    Thanks for your time.

Look on the circuit board on the drive, the jumpers should be there, not on the connector end. And as for getting the files off of the drive, get a external drive enclosure so that you can use it, not connect directly to the IDE interface on the other computer.

    brownizs,

Thanks so much for the 'look on the board' advice... found the shifty little suckers! :) Odd though, it has two jumpers, but only mentions one on the diagram. I see the one that it says I need to pull off, but it has a second one at the top end of the line of pins (the one I need to remove is at the bottom.)

Are you talking about buying something? This is a drive that I will throw into the trash after I have gotten the files off of it... I don't want to build it a house and make it comfy. lol
So is that a 'no' to just letting the drive rest in the space without being bolted down?

I am not a big memory user, so I do not need the extra space, just the files. When that 1GB drive was my soul storage, I only filled it up once. Now I have a 17GB HD and I am using less than half of it.

Had my slave drive propped up in the case ( well half way in the case - due to lack of room ...) was that was for two years until I moved everything into a bigger case ...really doesn't matter as long as it doesn't get jarred.

EXCELLENT! Thanks TimW! Looks like I will be recovering some files tonight! WOO HOO!

Thanks to both of you for your help!

lol I had already taken a peek inside the HD and completely over looked the (um...?) control/configuration pins. For some odd reason I was looking for the adult sized version that you can usually see from the outside of the case.
