hard drive write error

i just got a 500 GB external hdd, i keep getting this error and i am not sure why as the drive is brand new, is it defective? it came in DAT32 i converted it to NTFS

it is a western digital essential 500 MyBook

sadly this did not fix the problem i followed it all on that page but my stuff was already setup correctly, heres the thing, it is a 500 gig, and i dont have it partitioned, is that a problem?

also i have it in NTFS if it was in fat32 would i still be having this problem

What exactly do you mean by 'you don't have it partitioned'??? If it's NTFS, it MUST be partitioned. If you mean that you haven't split it into several smaller partitions, that doesn't matter. It should work fine as a 500gb with WinXP SP2 or Vista. If you have any data on it now, save it elsewhere. Try deleting the primary partition, re-partitoning and reformatting it. Right click My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management. Right click on the drive, and select the appropriate action.... it shouldn't matter if it's FAT32 or NTFS if you're using WinXP or Vista (or Win2000 SP4). I have several external HD's, and they're all NTFS and they work fine.... If you continue to have trouble, visit the Western Digital web site, go to the downloads page, and get the diagnostic and the hard drive installation software (they're both free). Run the install software first to see if that corrects the problem; if not, run the diagnostic. There's always the chance that the drive has gone south
