Can you help with merging a hard drive. I just got a satellite laptop however the drive was partitioned, is it possible for me to merge it back to one big hard drive as i am having problems with one of the partitioned drive???:cool

It's possible that the partitioning was done to create a 'restore partition' for your computer, and, if you store data to it, you may be corrupting the restore partition, and be unable to restore to first use. How big is the 'c' drive and how big is the 'd' drive? Is there only one drive with 2 partitions?

The entire drive is 120gb it is split into 3 drives, c is 29.2gb D is 40gb E is 43.4gb. The D drive is now not accessable and as such it is showing 0 bytes available. As such i am here just thinking about merging back all the drives to one

So, the computer came this way-three partitions on one drive?
The "D" drive is either your restore partition (which is why it is invisible to the rest of the system) or was not formatted. If it's your restore partition, you DO NOT want to format it. Did you check your documentation or the supplier for restore partition information?

    Hope this helps.

Why would a restore partition be over 40GB?

The drive was working before, had user data on it, but my girl friend was using it and all of sudden she is telling me that it is telling her that access is denied. It was searching for a flash utility tempory file so i re-installed it now it just says access denied. I am thinking about formatting the drive over but i would still like to merger all the drives back to one.

Partition Magic or BiNG (free) will be able to do this for you.

Make sure that you back up all your data because working with partitioning progs can sometimes go wrong......

Best advice is to delete D: and then just move E: to fill the gap and then increase it's size (ie E:\) to fill the rest of the disk. Once this is done and because of the way that an o/s allocates drive letters E: may most likely change to D: (and you will have no E: as HDD but maybe as the drive lettering for your first optical drive)

Personally, having your important data located on the primary active / bootable partition ie C: where the o/s is located is dangerous.

Also get an external HDD and back up your data just in case the laptop's HDD develops a mechanical problem.

    Good Luck

Help please? I just bought an old Gateway solo Pro 9300 laptop for my young son. Nothing fancy, just something for him to learn on. My problem is, the hard drive is password protected. Thought it was a good deal. I just want in to allow me to partition and install XP PRO, And Ubuntu. Is there a way around the password? Or a way to crack it? Obviously if money were no object I would have bought him a new one, so any free fix yould make you my HERO. thanks
