What is it that wears out in a hard drive that causes failure? Is it the motor, or the disks that hold the informantion?

the motor and disk are designed to last 10,000 hours usually.

the circuit board is the first thing that goes south.

one can buy an exact copy of the same harddrive, swap circuit boards and get them to run again,

i've done that process a couple of times over the years.

How hard is it to swap circuit boards?
