Hard Drives

:wave Hi All, I'm a newby and I would like some advice on the best brand of hard drive. I have been looking at Western Digital & Seagate in particular. Checking on the warranty, Seagate offer 5 years & WD 3 years. Are there any suggestions of other brands?

 

I would recommend the two brands you named. Had a bad experience with a Maxtor harddrive before, basically they kept breaking no matter how many replacements they sent. Never had a problem with Western Digital or Seagate though.

 

For internal I use Maxtor, have never purchased one over 120 GB though, and the few desktop ones replaced, that had failed, were Maxtor. For external I like Western Digital, use 250 and 500 GB My Books, just USB, no firewire or other connections. As I recall Maxtor bought Seagate, so they are now manufactured by the same company.

I'll third the recomendation of Western Digital & Seagate hard-drives. I have a preference for Seagate - I've noticed a few of my older (and I mean 4+ years) WD have started making more noise then Seagates of around the same age. Performance has stayed the same, though, as far as I can tell. To be honest, the noise could be usage related also.

Recently bought a 250 GB Seagate as an external drive. Very happy with it.

 

I've only ever had one HD crap out on me and it was a Western Digital...... now i'm all Seagate and haven't had a single problem yet
