    For Windows XP with SP1 or "2 the max volume (partition) sizes are
    If you have a larger disk and the software to partition it windows XP will address each partition up to the max size.

    FAT16 = 4.3 Gb
    FAT32 = 8.8TB
    NTFS = 281.5TB

    1TB = 1000GB

    Hope this helps

    8.8gb for FAT32? I'm sitting right next to a Gateway running WinME (FAT32) on a 40gb drive... maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying confused ... I can be a bit slow at times ;)

    That was quick you spotted the error, thanks Dave.

    However I have a further quote from the Microsoft XP resource Kit

    "In theory FAT32 volumes can be about 8 terabytes, However the maximum FAT32 volume that windows XP PRO can format is 32 GB. However Windows XP PRO can read to and write from larger volumes formatted by other systems.

    I guess i was not clear enought i mean when you take a 200 GIGS harddisk
    to windows xp NOT SP1 or SP2 it will only see 137 GIGS NOT 200 GIGS.

    So i want to knows what is the biggest size windows see for:

    XP Pro = 137 GIGS max size.
    XP Pro SP1 = ??? GIGS max size.
    XP Pro SP2 = Unlimited i think ???

    These are all NTFS, because using Fat32 on larger drives is incredibly inefficient.

    XP RTM: 137gb, +/-
    XP SP1: Theoretical: 256 Terabytes using 64kb clusters. Using the default 4kb cluster size, it would 16 Terabytes. It would require dynamic drives though. Your BIOS would probably choke well before that. SP1 adds an updated atapi.sys driver, and requires 48 bit LBA support from the BIOS or hard drive controller.
    XP SP2: Same. The OS cannot read the maximum size of the NTFS specification.
