HardDrive appears dead, trying to restituate

Computer is an HP Compaq 8510p that had a 250 gb drive put in it at time of receipt. Is running XP SP3. Hard drive is giving error of 10008 replace hard drive. gets stuck when trying to boot widows. cannot boot to dos gets stuck at bmload.sys

Downloaded the ultimatebootcd as I do not have a windows recovery disk wit me (400 miles from home) Ran the HDD for HCAT2 received a bunch of info and then stated was loading the boot sector 0002d1 int1e=f000efc7 and then states non system disk or disk error. replace and press any key.

When I do that it goes to windows and gets stuck. Is there any way that I can get to a dos prompt without launching windows so I can run a chkdsk.

Just need the computer up long enough to copy some files off of it?

This won't get Windows to boot but it will help you copy those files, allowing you to attempt to fix your Windows OS without worrying about losing your files. Puppy Linux is an OS that can be booted from a CD or USB drive and will run in RAM.
