Hardware/anti-virus/software q's combined

Hello geeks, I just got a new toshiba lap top, ordered online from Best Buy. They asked if I wanted to buy anti-virus for 19.99 and I said ok.

What I got was "Trend" anti-virus (I've never heard of them)

As soon as I loaded the Trend software, it said that I needed updates. I tried that, but being in the middle of nowhere, with dial up as my only option, the updates didn't load.

In the meantime, I found this thing by accident, called RegTool, did a scan with them, and now they want me to register so it can clear off more stuff. TRegTool claims thqt I still have more than 1500 issues that must be adressed.

My only internet interests are some cooking websites, etc. In general, long term websites with no history of any virus or any other issues.

I can search and find most anything I want.

I am not the least interested in most of the things people post about here, heck, I have no idea what the questions are, let alone having any answers.

I am a grandma, so think of me as your grandma for the moment, and help me figure out if I have enough protection with TREND. I use AOL for my dial up connection. Do you know what this RegTool thing is? Should I register for it and let it "fix the 1520" problems/threats that they see that Trend doesn't.

I guess mostly I'm really PO'd that I have this new computer, and I started downloading PartyPoker about an hour ago, and it is still at only 12%, and not moving.

I doubt that there will ever be anything but dial up here. But I am also really really worried about making sure my little cheap lap top is as protected as possible.
