Do you recommend a hardware firewall? I have been using Sonicwall. It is up for renewal and I am trying to decide whether it is worth renewing.

    Greetings, Happy_Macomb...

Depends upon how you are accessing the internet, what you are using the internet for, the operating systems of the machines in your network, etc.

Most broadband routers now act as a hardware firewall and most modern Windows operating systems contain a basic software firewall. In my opinion, for generic safe surfing that's adequate firewall protection.

Thanks. We're pretty generic, so that's good to know. My computer stays updated, but (sigh) my husband and kids don't keep theirs updated so I liked having something in place to offset their indifference. I also liked the content filter, but we've probably outgrown the need for that.

Yeah, as long as you've got a good, updated antivirus program running you should be good to go.

Bottom line is common sense: the internet is as safe or as virulent as you want it to be - it's always up to the user.

I always use both a hardware and a software firewall on all computers in the house (currently 7).
I also recommend getting the paid version of malwarebytes. It will play nice with almost any av program plus the paid version monitors in real time and prevents you from going to sites that have malware. Both my husband and I have been prevented from going to certain sites at times. Since we are in our mid and late 60's our surfing is real tame. It just goes to show you that a site that might appear safe may not be.

Thanks, Plodr, I'll definitely do that. I think I have the free version -- I'll upgrade!

I have the paid version of SuperAntiSpyware. Can I run both that and the paid version of Malwarebytes simultaneously? Or do they do they exact same thing so doing that would be pointless?
