hardware identification

i recently was goven an old p1, so i decided to take it 2 bits(as u do) but some of the parts i had never seen before and i am unsure what they r, i know that u geeks on this forem can help me identify the parts and ports, idealy i would like to know:
what the parts r
where the procesor is(i heard that it might be one of the cards)
what the ports r and do

plz help

The processor is probably in a box which is attached to the motherboard.

You got digital photos we could look at?

yes, headphones do fit into to the black port, could this mean its a sound card ?

 

the card below the gfx card with 2 black sockets,yes.Also check to see if they fit into the 3 similar sockets above the gfx card it might have onboard sound.

 

btw what are the ports labled 'com1' and 'com2'?
also the other card seen earlier in this thread names'0001',it has no ports on it and i am unsure what it is or what it does, any ideas ?

 

yes the eaephones do fit into the socket avove making it "onboard sound"


what is onboard sound?

 

the big long one is for printers.Check the three small holes the same size as on the sound card that are below thw com ports.

 

plug your headphones into them

what are com ports ? what do they do ?

 

com 1 and 2 are for digital cameras and stuff like that and the big long one is only for printers and scanners.

Sorry forgot onboard sound is a sound card built into the motherboard it works the same as a soundcard but isnt as good quality they put them there to sell cheap computers.

 

See those wide grey cables could you carefully move them to the side and take a photo of whats behind.

 

now what about the other card? any suggestions, it is smaller that the gxc and the sound card and has no ports on it!, it fits into the same slot as the sound card, any ideas?

i once knew of a computer that had a cpu as a card rather than what a cpu looks like now, could it be the cpu?

 

sorry i took those pictures and now im at my m8s house, those are the only pics i have, i know for sure that behing the large grey cables there is 4 slots of ram,(2 being used) thats all, for sure

 

I dont know for sure without a close up of the back of the cards sockets,but i would guess its a usb card.If were lookin at the same one,someone round here will know hell they probably made it.

 

Whoa. COM ports are for communication devices (thus the name) like modems... Ir, NIC, dialup... that sort of thing. The Paralell port has 27 pins and looks like its on the motherboard itself. The port thats not as big as parallel but bigger than the COMs is a keyboard port.

Onboard sound on a P1 is pretty unusual, or at least I remember it to be so.

One of the cards may be a HDD controller.

 

HDD controled, remember im a newbie, maximum of 4 letters will do me, lol.
whats a hdd controler, could it be the card that has no ports on it?

Never seen a keyboard port,before my time,in fact the first comp I had was a p2 350mhz about 10 years ago or a bit less,thought it was the DB and Id never need another one,how wrong I was,off to bed anyway cant read the type,have fun the new world orders computers have crashed gonna lend a hand tommorrow.
