Hardware not being detected.

I am trying to re-install my wireless adapter but Windows not recognizing it for software download. I am using XP on HP laptop.

Any help appreciated.

 

Wireless can be a pain! At least you are not trying it in Linux...

How about posting some specs about the laptop, brand and so forth, and also the brand/model of the wireless card. Helps a lot to have that.

The laptop is a HP Pavillon ze5185, 2.40GHz
Adapter is Linksys 2.4, 802.11g, model WPC54G ver.4.
It was working before but I had to re-install because of anothe problem.
It was recognizing it now but software wouldn.t work so I unistalled then Windows wouldn't recognize.
Also, did a restore but didn't work.

OK, now it works sometimes if I put it in the slot just right, might take a few times, but then locks up the system. When I pull the card back out the system is normal, Is there a conflict?

 

If you have access to another PC (laptop or desktop) w/ a USB port, you can try the adapter and see if it locks up in a different PC. Then you'll know if the problem is the adapter or your laptop. Try updating the USB drivers by visiting www.hp.com and going to the driver page for your model of laptop; sometimes Windows Update will have driver updates available. Look on the left side after clicking 'Custom' and see if anything is listed under 'hardware'. The worst case scenario: your laptop USB ports may be failing. You can get a USB card for the PCMCIA expansion slot for under $40 if it turns out the built-in ports are no good.
