Hardware testing

I'm trying to find a good hardware testing software to test my system. Are there any free programs that are good? or would I need to purchase one to get the best results? Which do you recommend?

My computer was running very slowly, taking sometimes 20+ minutes just to boot up. I did a factory restore and it has since sped up considerably, but still seems to be running slower then it should. The computer is running Windows XP SP3.

Could you supply us with some PC hardware specs?

To find this info you can use the likes of Everest to find this info, at times a summary log of your PC can help, to do this

Install Everest and run
Click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next
Choose System Summary Only > Next
Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report, then click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop is best as easy place to find it, use Browse to locate desktop)

When you factory re-installed, did you start to install 3rd party extra applciations that where not part of the defaul factory install, if so what are they, mainly the startups and security applications I would be wanting to know here?

CCleaner and its Tools > Startup list can tell you whats starting.

If you boot into Safe Mode does it run OK, may look bad graphically due to running a basic gfx driver for safe mode, but do the apps open ok?

Slow PC could be your are malware infected or running too many security applications, could use msconfig to disable all startups and reboot then see if the PC works ok, then as earlier mentioned do list your startups and we could see what the cause "maybe"

Inquisitor could do what you want, but its only going to test your HW is working ok and can work under stress, its a Linux based live CD, so will need to burn the ISO to disk, download HERE and ImgBurn HERE will burn the ISO to disk, then you need to boot to CD, and run the tests, documentation at the site.
