Has anyone encountered this new virus/spyware/adware?

    Does anyone know the name of this virus/spyware: Symptoms are upon clicking on any program directs you to "what program would you like windows to open this with" and cannot open programs in the control panel such as add/remove programs , system, etc. Safe mode is no help, AVG finds it as a trojan removes it but the damage is done. Wipe and reload has been my only fix so far. I've seen it for about a month in XP and vista machines. Hoping to find the name in order to find a fix. Thanks so much! cando

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    It is not a new virus. It is just one of the symptoms from many different infections that are just trying to block you from running programs to fix the problems. Most frequently it comes with fake/rogue antivirus programs but that is not the only infection known to cause it. The fix is simple, just reset your file associations back to the proper settings. It is not necessary to reinstall a system.

    One method to reset the EXE file permissions is given in the 9th item down in the below:
